I need recommendations for lesser known and underapprecited games that are on Steam or otherwise. These can be games that got less than favorable reviews (and were therefore ignored by many) when they came out, but are actually not that bad, or games that it seems no one's heard of that deserve more attention. I'll start with two of my own. More will follow once I've looked through my collection and I remember more.

The Saboteur

This game is interesting for a number of reasons. It was the last game made by Pandemic studios, who made games like Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, the Destroy all Humans games and a few others before they were shut down. The game was doomed from the get-go, with the studio shutting down DURING its development. The game is set in France during World War II, and you play a resistance fighter. The game is very clunky, but it has a lot of interesting ideas, and in many ways it plays like a mixture of Grand theft Auto (with the open world and the driving) and Assassin's Creed (with how you're able to climb every building). The game has a great mechanic where mostly everything apart from the blood will be in black and white in an area until you liberate it. It's kind of a shame that more people haven't heard of it, because it's quite a lot of fun, and worth a look if you're into open-world action games with optional stealth where you can cause lots of mayhem. The biggest flaw with the game is that the DLC that lets you see uncencored titties is not available on the Playstation 3 version anymore.. proof that DLC is one of the worst things to happen to gaming.

Lord of the Rings Conquest

Another Pandemic Studios game, and probably the one responsible for them being shut down by EA. In this game they took what they learned making the excellent Star Wars Battlefront games and put it in the Lord of the Rings universe. The game received a lot of negative press upon its release, and I'd be lying if I said some of the criticism isn't valid. The combat can be very repetitive, the four classes you can choose from get old pretty fast, but if you can get passed that, the game is very, very fun. It lets you play through two campaigns with up to two people, letting you fight in the most epic battles from the movies, but the second campaign is by far the most interesting. In it you control the bad guys, and every mission ends with you killing a member of the Fellowship. IT LETS YOU BURN THE SHIRE DOWN AND SLAUGHTER HOBBITS. The game occasionally lets you control a hero/villain from the series, and massacring people (HOBBITS) as the Balrog or The Mouth or Sauron is really satisfying. The classes they give you all have different uses on the battlefield. The sorcerer's can put up shields to protect their allies, the scouts can turn invisible and insta-kill someone if manage to sneak behind them, the archers provide support from a distance, and the knights charge the enemy head-on. It's a shame that I never got to experience this game online, because I'm sure it would be a lot of fun.

ibb&obb. While it's not exactly obscure, it only has ~1k reviews on steam and I think it deserves SO much more! It's one of the most fun coop games I've played. It's gorgeous and simple, but executed so well imo. Highly recommend grabbing a friend and playing (with a mic)! I've had so many laughs while playing. :)

Sanctum. For some reason Sanctum 2 got a lot of buzz/people playing it, but I don't know many who have played Sanctum 1 and honestly I enjoy the first one a lot more. Sadly there's not many people playing so it's tough to play multiplayer unless you have friends who own the game, but I love playing with my friends as well as alone.

Quantum Conundrum. I feel like a lot of people who enjoyed Portal would also really like this.

I playd Ibb & Obb with my ex girlfriend when it came out, and I can't say I enjoyed it too much. I'm a very stupid person, and so was my ex, so we got very frustrated with it, and each other. I'm sure it's great if you're into those kind of games, though. I actually completely forgot about Sanctum. The last time I heard about it was when Yogscast did their video(s) on it all those years ago. I'm always looking for interesting Tower Defense games to play, so I'll be sure to check it out. I wish I was able to enjoy Portal-style games, but my brain not work so great.

My friend and I got stuck occasionally (sometimes 15-20 mins at a time) but thankfully it never became a frustrating thing. Which had surprised me honestly, since I tend to need to take breaks from puzzle games if I get stuck too easily, but since the gameplay is very smooth (ie. being able to constantly jump/move about with the momentum/not having to respawn ages away) it wasn't too bad.

Yeah I started playing Sanctum when the Yogscast first released their videos. It's one of the first steam games I bought and I still find myself going back to it whenever I'm in the mood for an FPS tower defence. :)

Whew, yeah. Ibb & Obb is a fantastically fun game, but certainly not for those short on patience or love of puzzling. It's an easy game to get frustrated with your partner on, if you're the type to get stressed by that sort of thing.

+1 on 'Ibb & Obb'. It's a really good puzzle game. And the graphic and sound design are really good in their own right.

I'm in the middle of 'Quantum Conundrum', but I have mixed feelings. It seems to take a lot more fiddling than 'Portal', and the attempts at humor don't land nearly as well. Still, I think the mechanics are pretty good.

for me it's hard to find someone to play with , I received a key from the dev to test when they work working on mac , And sadly I could not do a lot because of not being able to get my friends to try it. When I did find someone it was a lot of fun. It's just a big down side to this sorta co-op game.

Hell yes, Delver is awesome. I kind of stopped after feeling I had seen it all, and it didn't seem like the developer was very active at the time. It was a fun and memorable game. I especially liked (and hated) it when Albert has different timing sequence compared to Lavitz. Most other games would just offer a C&P replacement, but in LoD they are two unique and different characters, and I loved that fact, despite also hating having to learn a whole new timing, lol.

My favorite rogue-like has a sizable following but isn't on Steam, and I find that a large number of people have never heard of it. It's 'Dungeon Crawl', an entirely free, turn-based, RPG: https://crawl.develz.org/

Now, the graphics aren't much to look at, and the interface is very old-school, but if you get passed that it's a lot of fun. You have an incredible number of options, and the variety in dynamically generated play throughs is substantial.

Transformers Devastation its G1 Transformers, with the cast from the series(who are still alive at least) voicing their characters, 94% positive reviews, Platinum Games doing what they do best....why is this not spoken about more. :(

80 Days cool VN style game following Phileas Fogg in his journey around the world! Won loads of awards, high Metascore, Very Positive reviews, cheap price....228 people have reviewed it. 39 people played it in the last two weeks, criminal.

Age of Gladiators

Space Rangers HD: A War Apart - underappreciated. i have 16 friends who own it, one of which has put in more time than is required to collect the cards (has been bundled before)

Starcrawlers - probably something most people haven't heard of.

Mechrunner - ever heard of it? didnt think so! horrible voice acting, but neat action

Well one of the reasons not many new players get into Space Rangers is the lack of tutorial(its still using the basic one from 1st game) and so its hard to get into it. Gifted it to several people and all of them tried but just couldnt get the hang of it.

Add to it that for me its the worst version of Space Rangers 2 and the add pirate faction could have been used in a 3rd game in the series instead of adding it on top of the already crowded Space Rangers 2.

And also it feels more buggy than 2:Reboot

My main issue w/ the pirate implementation, is that the difficulty settings leave a bit to be desired, in that setting them to the hardest level, makes them 'too hard' (or, rather, 'avoid at all costs') in early game, but having them set to 'normal' difficulty makes them pushovers from around early-mid game onwards.

The screenshot appears to be from a scripted event, and doesn't show many pirates at all (if any? those are probably rangers & looks like pirates are all dead already). Looks like around 90-95% are military ships. ofc, I could be wrong, since I haven't played in 18 months, but being friendly with pirates, and having that many pirates in one system, doesn't really make a lot of sense either, as you'd then have expanded their territory, presumably .. (though all the warping coming out of the pirate base = a sector attack, possibly triggered by player, world event, whatever. don't think i'm wrong about that element of gameplay)................... (ed #3 or 4: and I guess those would be pirates, as military ships wouldn't be coming out of pirate base. laugh. i've never seen so many pirates in generic ships though. dunno. maybe i need to play some again)

But, yes, if they are pushed back to a couple of systems, possibly due to that default 'normal' setting of pirate strength, or taking an active role in knocking off any strong ones, then you'll have systems with 25, 50, or more in them. That being said, yeah, I don't particularly like that a new pirate is 'born' every time one is destroyed.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

All of those ships are pirates(white dots on the map = pirates) . Also , yes it might be scripted because pirates often change hyperspace travel direction of 1 system for a month or so. Also I wasnt friendly for them. Add to it that this caused my PC to crash( i7-4790k not OC, 16gb ram 1600mHz, GTX 770).
The whole pirate addition was just uncalled for and wasted effort because 2:Reboot already had a story and IIRC pirates in SR1 were organised but after the fight with the klissans they went back to "Everybody for himself" so adding pirates in SR2 was just uncalled for when they could just make SR3 and instead of dominators you have pirates.

Also a bit more about the SS : pirates dont have cap on ships in a single system so they can get as many as they can compared to the millitary that got 3 or 4 ships(because flagships) per planet.

I don't really pay any attention to how popular the games I like are so it's hard for me to tell which ones are underappreciated and unfortunately I don't have any I can think of off the top of my head that are for PC. I will say, if you have a 360 or PS3 it's probably worth checking out the Zone of the Enders series (it doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves), Resonance of Fate and Eternal Sonata.

I never hear/see anyone talk about Max: The Curse of Brotherhood I enjoyed it VERY much. Review:

The game begins in a very Labyrinth-esque way, and it's up to you to save your brother from the trouble you caused for him. ;p Gameplay starts out as a very basic platformer, but it's not long until you start gaining some powers, and that's where the true charm of the game starts shining through. The puzzle mechanics are brilliantly realized, ranging anywhere from easy to perplexing, but not to the point of frustration.

I was enjoying the puzzle aspect of the game so much that I was actually a bit disappointed when, in latter levels, we started needing to depend on quick decision-making, and at times, good reflexes! It wasn't until the final sequence of the game that I remembered -- Oh yeah, this is what platformers used to be all about! (ie. Donkey Kong Country, etc.) The beauty of these sections is that, while they may be difficult, they are still doable! It may take a dozen tries, but it CAN be done, AND you don't have to keep starting the level over again to achieve it, as the automatic save-points are well-spaced.

Something I truly love about the game is the graphics. Sure, they're pretty, but the devs did an amazing job making a side-scrolling platformer feel like a 3D game by periodically changing up the perspective. Beautifully done, devs, I'm very impressed! :D

The music was nicely-chosen, and I enjoyed the voices, as well -- especially some of Max's "YEEES!" moments. lol~

Points to remember:

  • You can attach vines to a myraid of objects, ranging from branches to boulders and more.
  • Items can be cut at the base OR the tip!
  • Be creative and don't give up! The devs give us a lot of freedom with our powers, and sometimes it's going to be trial-and-error figuring things out.

There are a couple of things to be on the lookout for whilst you're running around. They are beholders (plants with eyeballs at the end of a stalk that allow the user to spy on the world) and pieces of an amulet. These collectibles are not needed to complete the game, but they sure do add an extra bit of fun. XD You can replay a chapter at any time (even after you've completed the game) from via the menu, and looking at the menu during gameplay will show you how many you have left to find on your current level. In addition, there are 27 Achievements for you to earn, another plus in my books.

Overall, I found Max: The Curse of Brotherhood to be a delightful game, full of beauty, danger, excitement... and tempered with just a splash of good old fashioned platformer-frustration. I would say that it's OK to play with older kids, but perhaps not little ones. There's a big scary monster in there (whom I find to be absolutely fabulous!) but it might upset younger children.

Highly recommended!
