What they left out of the story is that this was definitely the wrong night to offer 50 cent beers. I'm pretty sure the drinking age in Illinois was 18 back then (as it was in most states).
Adding to the problem, probably: The White Sox are based on the South Side. Pretty much the blackest part of town. So even if the folks who came for the promotion were baseball fans, the Sox weren't their team (the Cubs were).
