Operation piggybank is a go! :)

Ok, I won't say what operation piggybank is, since xarabas made a lot of sense... :) Whatever it is, congratulations on being able to read! :) Good luck! :)

And a special bad luck to the goofballs who can't read, but just enter this giveaway with their script. Yeah, screw you guys... :)

yeah, screw those guys!

Somehow I keep thinking forum giveaways will only be noticed by people who can read, but...

Nowadays I think there's a large group of people who enter everything they can find, with a script, laziness, or just concentrated evil... Not sure which...

People these days don't even read the thread and able to enter GA. Happened to my event as well. I didn't even put the links for giveaway I just put the codes in the spoilers and leechers still able to get to it.

Glad you like it, in case if you want to try the idea, do read the complete OP it will tell you the issues that I face during the GA as well and you can probably mold it for a better outcome.

Ahh, ouch, sorry to see it... :( That's no fun at all... :(

I gave away some visual novel games and had the same problem, one winner hadn't read a thing, just wanted free stuff... :( Even if I don't like it, nowadays I expect public giveaways to be like that... But with forum giveaways I'd like to think people can read... Seems it's asking too much...

However the good part of that thread was, that I was able to choose a few good people who I can safely offer whitelist GA's and I can separate wheat from chaff :-)

Well, you linked this one in another giveaway by you of a game on my wishlist... Haven't visited the forum in ages... That's probably also why I can't figure out what operation piggybank is. :D

If you're really still concerned about bots for gibs like this one, just pass it through a sgtools filter.
Don't even have to set anything, just the addition of the filter should thwart bots that aren't specifically configured for it, which ought be exceedingly few.

That's the theory, anyway :)

Since when is reading needed for anything? Sometimes I have the feeling not knowing how to read (or think) is some sort of needed pre-qualification for politicians and the like...

And you too think that there is some giant population of bot users, and not just plain lazy retards who don't bother reading?

o_o

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know the population size, but yes, they do exist. :) Sometimes they even admit to it. One of my recent forum giveaway winners said he was sorry for blah blah, he didn't read the description because Easy S. Gifts blah blah etc. :)

But I do think a lot of the people who say nothing are just playing it safe because they barely know enough English to navigate the website, not because they are bots. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Easy S.Gifts catches only public giveaways, not invite-only ones. And users using that feature are brain dead because it's doing more bad than good, as algorithm being used is really poor.

Writing a bot browsing through invite only gibs requires some effort and knowledge, and even if somebody had both of that, he wouldn't share such thing to the public, so the population of users you're referring to in the OP can be counted on one hand.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know the details... From his description I assumed it was automatically entering every giveaway he loaded with his browser, not trying to follow all the links in every forum post - but I wouldn't be surprised if some people are doing that, too...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't accuse you for anything, I don't like people joining invite only giveaway without reading either. I'm just trying to find logic in what you posted.

People who are joining invite-only giveaways without reading are in 99.8% lazy humans who don't care about you or what you want to tell them, they see giveaway - they click button.

0.2% left are people that coded themselves scripts/bots for that, yet they're too stupid to add logic that would prevent bot from joining if he notices something potentially alarming in the giveaway description.

For instance, if I ever wanted to make a bot that would actually join those invite only giveaways for me, I'd at least scan for words "blacklist", "read", "script", "bot". If any word is detected, schedule giveaway for manual join, and don't ever try to join it.

It's THAT simple, and people smart enough to code things like that know how to deal with it. That's why I say that people using Easy S.Gifts are simply put retards because they're using tool they can't understand. We had one guy using easy s.gifts in my touhou giveaways group, and he was kicked by archibot before he could even spot that script blindly joined giveaway he was not eligible for, "I'm sorry" was not enough. Rules are rules, you accept them or you're out.

Actually, I get something like this on my PC work. I use some of the scripts posted on the forums, like steamgifts++ etc. Just normal things to make the site more convenient to browse. AFAIK, Firefox syncs my scripts between browsers. However, when I am on my PC at work and I click on a GA to look at it, I automatically get entered, and have to to click "leave" to remove myself every time. I am not sure what userscript is doing that, as it doesn't happen on my PC here at home.
The same thing could be what the other person was referring to.

It syncs your add-ons, but not the settings, so you should configure them again on new browsers :)

Well, AutoJoin for Chrome has 7k users. Not millions, but still they are here :P

But yeah, those are public only. Kinda wonder if someone bothered with making invite-only bot...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thing is, those are still silly scripts that depend directly on browser and what it receives. Writing full-fledged bot like ArchiBoT, who is independent and run without any kind of browser, requires knowledge, and even more of it to not get into troubles, be it with staff or with users blacklisting you.

For instance, even if you were cg, you couldn't tell if this giveaway was brought to my attention by ArchiBoT, who was crawling through the discussions, or by me directly. It's because smart people who know how to code also can foresee potential consequences, and they won't bother with coding something potentially harmful, neither would make it public for other people.

I get you. All in all, it's a bit like calling "phisher" a "hacker", even those "scripter-kiddies" now become a "bot"

Well, I don't know what sort of games you enjoy, but if you like beating up on things in 3d, with a sword or a bow or a whatever, and reading stuff, and exploring, and finding loot, and talking to people, and getting lost, and dying, and hmm, yeah actually a lot of dying, then you might enjoy Dark Souls. It's a lot of fun to some people, and no fun at all to other people. :)

If you like RPGs, give it a try. :) Just don't expect quest markers or hand-holding. :) If you avoid spoilers and just play blind, you'll probably miss a lot of the game the first time through. Or get frustrated and quit because a lot of important things are not explained. :) But it's fun, honest! :)
