Description

With the new era of retro-style pixelated indie games I have a feeling like time flows backwards =)
I don't know, it was funny to see the Cave Story for the first time - it brought nostalgia to me and my friends, but after that... I know that many people like these 2-D platformers, but I just can't return there, to that time =< I wonder - would I be playing the same games as my grandchildren years from now? =)

Interesting question...
Will VR be consider "playing" in, lets say, 20 or 30 years?
The limits will be foggy imo...

I am one if those people who likes platformer games :D

As for the question, we can have only slightest idea about what kind of technological advancements we will have in the future. Honestly, I am not so very excited about the whole VR thing yet, because there's still a lot of work to be done. Yes, you can move your head as a camera, that's cool, but the fact that you have to use KB+M or a gamepad is ruining the full immersion for me. Still, I'd like to try out something like NerveGear :)

I meant it more in a sense of generation gap than the technological advancement (both themes are linked with each other, though) =)
Like, for example, it's hard for me to play some old games, even if they were masterpieces for its own time.

I see your point. We could discuss both generation gap and technologies until our bones will turn to dust.

Basically, I think it depends on person's preferences, previous experience and game's relevance.

  • Preferences: Tom likes retro (or any other video game genre) games in general, he digs their tight controls, for pixel graphics, chiptune soundtrack. He will play older titles (Game A for example), because he likes the genre.
  • Experience: Tom played Game A when he was a kid and he liked it. He may or may not play it from time to time even if its more than 10+ years old now. That's why he loves playing games similar to Game A.
  • Relevance: Tom played Game A when he was a kid and he liked it. He still likes it, maybe he will play it sometime, but Game B was released yesterday. Why would he play Game A when there's Game B, which is newer, cooler and more actual for this time?

So, what I want to say is that people will always be more likely to play games which are actual for their time, be it kids or adults. But our preferences and previous experience also influences our choices. That's why we see more kids playing CoD, CS:GO, GTA V - because they're actual for their time.

I found this train again, let's continue (:
I am a sucker for pixel graphics. Pixel graphics definitely make me take a second look at games I wouldn't normally play, e.g. horror. I like platformers too, so I'm happy with the 'new era'.
History always repeats itself, not only for games, nowadays you see fashion trends that were once popular in the past and is back again. I think there'll always be some sort of cycle, despite technology, so yeah, perhaps you could play those games together with your grandkids. Wouldn't that be nice (:

To me, current mass culture seems not as a entity in its cycle, but as a time when people are greedily utilizing and mixing all possible ideas from the past =) I'm not saying it it a bad thing, because most of the ideas in my favorite games are not that new, just it would be nice to witness something completely new, even if I would not understand it or like it. If it won't happen, then, of course, I'll be able to play remastered Witchers and Fallouts 30-40 years later =)
