Yeah melee can be nice, but there's a reason why armies stopped using them around the First World War.

So I'd prefer an assault rifle. Or better yet, an RPG launcher :D

Guns can be nice, but when run out of ammo they're useless. I'd say the best weapon would be a melee weapon that has durability and range.

According to The Zombie Survival Guide it is a crowbar, military issue machete or trench spike depending what subclass of melee weapon. My personal choice would be a sniper rifle holed up somewhere, crowbar on the move.

Depending on the zombies and how hard they are to kill, I'd say maybe a gun would be better. Just stack up on A LOT of ammo(also, if you run out they still do nice blunt weapons). If they're easy to kill then light weapons to carry such as small pistols and automatic pistols would be best. If they're tough to kill, then military grade weapons. And don't forget grenades! Zombies get attracted by sound, so if you get into trouble, you will not only blow up a huge mob but also attract their friends' attention towards the explosion so you can sneak away. :D
For melee weapons a huge one would slow you down. Get a sword or short blade or something. Ninja stuff are apparently nice, sharp and comfortable. :)

PS: It might sound like loud weapons is a bad idea, but if the zombies are the one bite= you're dead variety distance is important. :P
