And this one also contains the word "sacred" in the title. It's not the best game of its type (that would be Age of Wonders), but it's not bad. I found the battles to get a bit dull after a while though.
The second game is a rival for HOMM imho, the campaign and the art is less cartoonish.Although there are less units per faction, it features Dwarves which HOMM did not until a DLC for HOMM V. I played Disciples 2:Gallean's Return first though.

D2 is the only one I found to be on equal footing, and tbh I never played any AoW games growing up.HOMM 1-3 have nostalgia going for them for me, too.
