Can't really go wrong with your very first desktop pc. Think of it as a learning experience. It did sound like the ethernet was damaged from the thunderstorm. If you still can't connect it to the internet, try buying a USB wireless internet adapter and leave it in a USB port.
Thanks, I'm going to try and uninstall the internet drivers and then install the updated ones, but I'll try a USB wireless if that doesn't work. Yeah, I'm not really a graphic-minded gamer so if the CPU is as good as people say I'll be able to get by for a good decade once I get a decent GPU.
