You can also, you know, work. I'm all too familiar with being poor, but in almost any case there's no excuse for not being able to scrape together at least a few extra dollars (or equivalent) a day doing odd jobs - especially if one is already fortunate enough in their living situation to have an internet connection and a halfway capable PC, and especially if one spends enough time on SteamGifts to rack up, say, 36 wins and 500+ comments within a year of registering.

Cultural norms aside, I find it exceedingly hard to believe that there is simply no way for anyone under the age of 18 to earn money for themselves.

It mind sound crazy, but I'm talking about public places.. only way you could see someone work that's below 18 is because his parents are having an shop, that's selling goods, or mostly it's ice cream shops, but that's just part time. My parents are busy with their own jobs, we don't have anything similar. I've looking to get job as a web developer, and all near places that were looking for workers state in agreement that you need to be 18+. It sucks.
