Day 1

First lesson learnt: Take care of the elder ones.

I didn't usually spend much time with my grandpa, but because of an operation he spend a few weeks at home. It's something that might seem obvious, but you can learn a lot by talking with them. Everything you experience makes you a little wiser, and they've experienced quite a lot. And I saw that in this time he spent with us. Caring about your grandparents and having good conversations with them (if possible) is something rewarding for both you and them.

Sadly I don't have any grandparents left, but I understand to the fullest, that you have enjoy every moment you can with your beloved ones :)

It is sad that in my country too many of the grandparents do not live to see their grandchildren (especially granddads), or for the moment their grandchildren are starting to listen.

Oh, it is indeed sad. It can be applied to any of your beloved ones, though ^^

I grew up living with my mom's parents. I took it for granted, they spoiled me, and all that growing up. Recently it's been hard to address that they're getting older. My mother was young when I was born, they've always been young. I constantly try to balance having my own life, and living in my own house (around 35 mins from theirs) with visiting and spending time with them. It's still hard not to take for granted that they're always there for me.

I understand your situation, it's quite comforting to know that you have your grandparents there for you. Keep it like this, and enjoy their company ^^

It's unfortunate that I never had much of a relationship with my grandparents. Biggest reason being that they live(d) in South Korea while my family and I live in Canada. But I have a feeling that even if I did live in South Korea, I would never have been close to them due to Korean culture. There is a culture of "respecting your elders" in SK but it's much more extreme than in Western cultures. I could never imagine hugging my grandparents or talking to them about my day. Not all grandparents in SK are like that but mine were pretty strict about respect and distance. Now, the only grandparent I have left is my grandmother on my dad's side. The last time I saw her was in 2009 and I probably will not see her again for a very long time... if not never.

I'm sorry to hear that... Obviously, every culture has its own "traditions", and maybe what is usually done in one country isn't usual at all in another. Here in Spain, it is quite usual to see little children hugging their grandparents, and I think it's a little bit in our culture, this "being more charming". It's complicated because of the distance too, but you can apply that to other beloves ones, not just your grandparents! ^^

Before I lost my grandmother, she would like watching South American soap operas and ranting about them to me. I wish I had done more, but I was a teenager with my own problems and issues. But I am always glad that I listened to her rants. My mother is now kind of doing the same with her own series and it has made me understand just how important this company to older folks is. They need the warmth and closeness. Good lesson.

I'm glad that you think the same way, and that you apply now that to your mother. Keep it like this :)
