Question: Why is Half-Life considered so great. What did it do that other games did not before it. Please try to answer this question.
Hmm. I'm seeing a pattern here. No cinematic, physics, story, graphics .
Now for physics I agree, it was the first if not the first to use them in a game play sort of way. Graphics I feel that DOOM 3 and Far cry had better although HL2 was delayed because of the leak. The story many games had good stories even before HL1 Unreal, Quake 2. After HL1 even more story driven FPS DOOM 3, Far cry, Vietcong, Halo, Unreal 2, etc. And the cinematic, I don't remember many FPS game leaving the FPS view during NPC Conversations.

I've only played HL2, and I played it for the first time about a year ago. Good game, I like that it always had something new in store for you. After you had done one thing for a while, the game introduced some new mechanic, so it never got boring. Hope it's ok to enter if I already have HL2. If not, let me know.

Yes you can enter.

also, it's one of the rare games that doesn't take over the control of the character. No cutscenes in which your character does some stuff without input, yu can run around and do whatever you want during the story parts where people tell thing etc

I really don't know. I'll win and tell you :D

I don't know why... have never played it so... Maybe because it was a good old-school FPS ?
Thanks anyway.

I rather won't enter. So far played a few hours with HL2 and so far - asides from the atmosphere and neat phisycs - to be honest I don't see why people love this game so much. Maybe later on it will get some ooomph to get me going... who knows :|

Well maybe the fact that it's 11 years old might have somthing to do with it :)). You have to put your mind in that period, from many perspectives of course it feels outdated.

I've grown up with civ 1, and I enjoy Fallout 1, 2, Arcanum and the original Red Alert even today but... I cannot grasp this game :| Maybe I'm expecting too much from the hype, and it's "just" a good game. That's still a great outcome nevertheless :)

First person shooters depend on tech prowess a lot more than those games. Most feel/look/sound/etc poor compared to present day shooters.

Everything, from its no cutscene storytelling to its best at the time AI, was top notch. From the intro you felt right off the bat it was gonna be something special.

^^^ This.
Other FPS games had (until that point) dropped you into and arena or corridor and thrown enemies at you. Half-Life was the first shooter to immerse you in the story by making the entire game the story. You were never pulled "out" of the game with a cut-scene, and enemy encounters fit the story (i.e. were not arbitrary).

The physics based puzzles, making you feel like you were the central star of the story line and not just playing some random character who was the protagonist - you were the protagonist! Combine that with the removal of cutscenes and the flawless flow the game had, it still is one of the best games ever made.

No cut-scenes, the great physics engine in the 2nd game, the great graphic (on its time)

To be honest. I don't know. It's not like it had a compelling story to tell or made much sense at all but at the time the first Half-Life was released it was the best you can get. Based off of this engine you got Counter-Strike and the overall fandom and following grew.
Half-Life had the big advantage of being the first of its kind, but it's still an overall good game including its sequels. Just a very good but plain FPS.

I don't know either, but I'd like to find out. So thanks for the chance! ^__^

I played it too late I guess. I felt it is overhyped, but that's just me.
