Judging by the lack of frequent mention of it in the few negative reviews of the game, it seems to be fairly rare.

Rather, it seems likely it may be a hardware compatibility issue, ie, your graphics card [drivers] may just not play nice with the game. That's quite often the case when a game doesn't work properly for a minority of users.
Pity about that either way- nothing like sitting down to play a game and finding.. you can't :X
Especially when you spend hours trying to get multiplayer to work, and can't manage. That's the worst.

You just bought the game, downloaded it and then they complain about what's taking so long, just so get it to run after they either started without you or they decided it's got no use and left!

I've got a reliable set of old friends I game with, so patience and understanding when it comes to games implicit in our relationship though there's one of them, ADHD levels of inability to hold attention, so she does usually end up playing on her own if there's issues :P.
That, though, actually makes it worse, though, because these are people you don't want to disappoint, and that, since they stick with you through it, you feel worse about doing so with.

So yeah, I think, no matter who you're gaming with, it pretty much sucks- and it's not like you can test if multiplayer will work or not without them, usually.
Yep, I feel you last paragraph ... if it's the whole game that does not run, you may say "F it, just do one round without me, I will figure things out here alone!", but if it is specifically the MP part which doesn't work, then you will probably end up changing small things and try again every time, testing your own patience and the one of your firends in the process. :D
I got irritated by the fact that I might have missed some side areas in the early stages (due to crumbling terrain time restrictions) :'P
The level design takes a bit of getting used to, as it differs from standard exploration-encouraging RPGs.
Definitely a gorgeous, fun, distinct game, though!
Take that experience, and look at just how much better Transistor looks in every way, and it's a very compelling game-
