I had the number saved as plain text from when I checked it with diff to see if it had a hidden message encoded in it (my first idea) so all I had to do was look at the file size.
I was a bit slow, I did a diff between this and a value of pi I found online, saw there was no difference, I messaged Oddllama saying it was identical but had less decimals then what I compared it to, Llana just told me wrong and posted a "")" emote. I then checked the characters used, and got 3142 characters, I sadly didn't realize the significance yet. so I posted that to Oddllama and immediately corrected myself, thinking that the 3 and the . were counted in the digits, so that the number of places was instead 3140. At this point Llama laughed at me. and I read what I typed... I did a face palm and answered correctly.
Thank you Oddllama, I had to talk through this one but I got there eventually.
I tried to write a script to diff it. Then I realized I forgot how to write scripts.
So I proceeded to compare it manually. Then I realized it was PI.
That definitely made me feel like an idiot. Mission accomplished. :P
The first part was fairly easy for me though, as the first thing I did was paste into notepad++, and it shows the file length and such other useful right in the status bar. So I noticed it right away.
Of course, I guess it just seemed too obvious to me. So I also tried comparing it with python. My first, sanity check was a simple equality, which came out true. I almost thought I'd gotten mixed up copy pasting and pasted the same thing twice.
So I figure, let's just try with 3142 and see if that's the answer. :P He tells me to make sure I'm not counting everything. At this point I'm sure I mixed up the copy pastes earlier, and he slipped in some letters somewhere in there. Try again, this time doing a character by character comparison, which for unrelated reasons doesn't quite work right.
Then it hits me, did I or did I not include the decimal point in the count? I mean, I even pointed out that 3142 was rounded up. So off by 1. LOL
I wouldn't have been able to solve this without Llama's help. The clue he gave me was "The answer is obvious."
And still, that took me forever to figure out.
