Just a slow high level appreciation train

What was the last good book you read?
Or you can post a black and white gif... but no negatives please :)

The last good book I actually finished was The Gnostic Gospels. I enjoy that sort of thing, and I have read a lot of early religious and spiritual material from various cultures and regions, sort of trying to find similarities and where stuff came from, and why it was put where it was for the purpose it intends to fulfill, and all that boring type stuff...

I recommend The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha by Charlesworth as a good scholarly volume of ancient texts, though it's mostly ancient Judaic. I picked up a set for I want to say $20 (maybe it was $30, but their book room still gives me unhealthy fantasies) at the AAR/SBL meeting last year, it's huge and fairly comprehensive.

I did that last year. I was so pissed off at how far off from the books the Hobbit movies were that it reminded me how pissed off I was about the Lord of the Rings movies, so I reread all the Middle Earth stuff just to make me happy.

Hard to choose - read 9 books so far this year and apart from one really big dissapointment (which noone will know, as it's by polish author) all were not too bad, but the best in this year so far (and seeing how absolutelly great it was it will probably stay the best book I read in 2016, even if it's 20 years old) was The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons - 2nd tome of Hyperion Cantos.

i read mostly spiritual books, so i don't think they can be evaluated as best, etc. as the insights gleemed from such books differs per person.

so instead... have a beer

Thanks for the gibs!

I don't know if the book I love and read qualifies as spiritual, but to me it does... though it doesn't directly relate to god. Perhaps it's more philosophical Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Still one of my all time favorite books, years later.

i'll check it out.

Oh and In my comment above, spiritual does not mean religious... many of the spiritual books i read are more about consciousness and the understanding of human of psychology,.... the identification of human behaviour patterns which by identifying them in ourselves, allow us to release ourselves from their grasp. Its kinda against the grain.. so not really on the best sellers list or anything.

More like this stuff. In fact, the 1st author on that list is pretty good. and this stuff

I'm completely aware that spiritual and religious are very different words and meanings... I'll look at it later. :)

I just finished reading a book called The Sparrow, about a group of people who go to the first planet discovered with alien life on it. Really good and got me invested in the characters, but the ending was a bummer.

If you're looking for some easier fare, the Monster Hunter International series is a lot of fun, just don't expect anything groundbreaking :P

Rebel Dawn by A.C. Crispin. Although I'm pretty sure its not canon anymore (thanks Disney) it is a cool series about Han Solo prior Episode IV. I enjoyed all three books actually.

I'm reading Augustine's Confessions currently. It's pretty good, but I have to read two chapters as homework tonight and it's kind of wordy, so I'm going to have a fun night.

I'm watching it right now as well actually. It's definitely better to read than to watch.....though at least it's a faithful adaptation. ;o
