out of curiosity, does time machine deal with the win partition? i think not, but i wanted to just confirm it (still ccc should be able to make a disk image of that)

Umm... No, it doesn't. It never has, and I just checked and there doesn't seem to be any option to enable it to back up Windows. The computer generally seems to treat the Windows and Mac halves as completely separate computers.

my backup experience with win is so bad that it would make sense to me to have a mac with bootcamp instead of a plain pc if time machine could work on the pc side...

I just did a search and found this. Apparently, Time Machine will back up a partition using Parallels or Fusion, but those take up a huge amount of space.

Go Linux? I find it rather stupid and irritating with the UAC thing but I've used to it by now. Still I get warning to some files that I run despite checking the box that I trust it and never to bother me again.

Well, that was an... interesting read (yes I did read everything in the thread). I can't help with that little problem though, never had to deal with the UAC- I usually just completely disable it and concentrate on having the anti-virus nag at me for stuff instead, but that's of no help in this situation. :/
