They're going to acquire even more studios than those two apparently: "Microsoft will acquire Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, and Playground Games. Additionally, Microsoft indicated it was interested in acquiring even more new studios."

I hope MS isn't buying all those studios because they want to make them publish their games only on Windows Store and Xbox, and perhaps limit those games on PC to Windows 10.

Well... it could be worse. At least they have some funding then to make more games. Now if they could make alpha protocol 2 that would be great thanks.

Ahh no, another of my favourites then that's not likely to see a sequel. But yeah you're right, a bad sequel is worse than no sequel, and I guess with a game like AP, the temptation would be impossibly strong to turn it into more of an action game, and less of an RPG, whereas what I would want from a sequel is less of the forced action sequences and more of the divergent paths an RPG offers. Having that choice in a different setting to the normal is what made it such a flawed gem in the first place.

I liked them being at Paradox, that is one of the more normal AAA publishers out there. Microsoft is not the absolute best decision, but so far as a game publisher on PC, they have one of the better track records from the past 20 or so years.

The only downside is that they will surely try to push the Windows Store for upcoming games, but if they also put them on GOG/Humble eventually, I am okay with it.

It would be pretty shocking otherwise since the PC with windows is basically their second platform. Even if they refused to admit that from time to time for no reason.

Even if the game quality not decreases. they're still going to probably be Xbox-first games.
And most likely Microsoft store, non-Steam games.

Bad news. It's possibly we will seen "Wasteland 3 - now only in Microsoft Store + only for Windows 10 + only with DirectX 12"

Bethesda selling themselves, that is quite an amusing thought.

Well, if they wanted to make a good one they'd just outsource it to Obsidian again.
Clearly, they don't want to be showed how much better they could be handling their IP...

From youtube comment somewhere. Shadowrun might be interesting IP they could throw at these studios. Not isometric RPG, but great story to do... With hype from Cyberpunk 2077 it could do well...

Well Obsidian isn't what it used to be, MS isn't that great either. Member how they handled the SOD: Year One release that was a joke.

In a post-GFWL world I'm optimistic of this purchase if it meant saving the studio.
More and more of Microsoft's first party titles are heading to Steam,
It's possible there might be a time restricted console exclusivity, but considering how large my backlog is I'm fine with that.

Nowadays there's very few console exclusive games I'm interested in, RDR/RDR2 being the outlier, and even it was more likely pushed by PlayStation/Rockstar than Microsoft.

A shame really, but at the other hand, InXile Entertainment already had a foot in bankruptcy, Torment : Tides of Numenera and The Bard's Tale IV flopped commercially, Obsidian wasn't doing much better, Tyranny and pillars of Eternity II : Deadfire were met very well by critics and reviews, but the sales were poor, so, it was either this or shutting the doors.

Let's (naively) hope they'd be allowed to keep maximum creative freedom, and that the money flow from Microsoft will allow them to make bigger, better and even more ambitious games.

All are great games you've mentioned and all in my Wishlist. Imo the generation nowadays is not willing to pay much for story-heavy RPGs rather, they spent on ARPGs instead. There's a lot of lore and reading in these titles. In a way its worth it, in the other view there's no place to use their controllers. Its a shame, a real shame. I am not pinning any hopes on MS. Perhaps they can find a formula in balancing Lore, Voice acting and Action in their future titles.

We'll see. Being saved by a deal with the devil usually comes with a price. If it's gonna be Win10 exclusives from now on, it's the same to me as if they'd just shut down. And I just can't see how being part of MS would work together with DRM free or linux support for their games. But maybe I'm wrong, time will tell.

They don't sell well basically because they are fantastic in a way that's extremely attractive to the minority (weirdos like you or me), but not appealing to the mass audience. Ergo, to increase the sales these games have to change, and I'm 99% sure that they have to change not in a way I'd enjoy (I know I'm probably oversimplifying it, but still). Them becoming Win10 exclusives is the least ugly result of this deal I can imagine. Obviously, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

hopefully this won't be another hostile takeover, or hostile takeover because of bad financial situation of those companies because of their bigger than average ambitions. like with many others who never produced anything quality again after such takeovers (ex. Microprose). there are only few quality classic rpg producing companies (like Obsidian) :/ anyway i won't say news don't scare me a bit.

Hexbox exclusives at some point? Would suck if I were using only a Sony or Nintendo console, but it's PC anyway I guess, and I use Windows (in case I fart). ;) As long as I can use Win 7, I'm cool with it.

I still think Microsoft makes the worst consoles known to mankind. I'd stick to computer/pc exclusively....

I wouldn't count on it, don't they have a history of making games only work on the most recent Windows versions, just because they can?... 😒

I'm not counting on it either ^ I've seen the good older versions of Windows go down slowly... missing some of the more stable ones of the past years/decades, actually... I will definitely work on other stuff for a while until I feel it's a good time to upgrade, if in fact certain games require that higher than 7 requirement, kinda like some games needing 10+ series NVIDIA or comparable graphics cards... but I've got a feeling it'll be a while still as far as my own upgrading on either front, if it even happens to be Win at that time... Minimum requirements will probably be Win 10+, as you are saying. Just haven't wanted to "optimize" any further yet - I haven't even thought about thinking about when I will... if that makes sense even. D:

If M$ are smart and just let them make the games they want to make, this is amazing news. Big funding and will probably be on PC... the only bad thing is they could be Windows Store exclusive on PC, but I can forgive that as long as they are awesome games.
