Hey guys, we’ve noticed that a number of un-humble users are buying lots of Humble Indie Bundle 4’s for one penny, and then using their Steam codes to “legitimize” automated Steam accounts in order to increase their odds of winning prizes in Valve’s current raffle promotion. This is unfair to legitimate entrants and is definitely not what we wanted to encourage with Humble Indie Bundle 4. It’s a lose-lose situation for the indie developers, charities, Valve, and Humble Bundle.

Therefore, starting immediately, new orders under a humble threshold of $1 will not contain Steam keys.

If you can’t afford a dollar but still need a Steam key and promise not to resell it or otherwise abuse it, please contact our support team with your humble appeal and we’ll purchase a new bundle for you on a case by case basis.

What do you guys think about this change? Is there a better way to help cut down on abuse?

Listen up people I work two jobs with shitty pay yet I still manage to meet my expenses and save up enough to buy one of those visa gift cards and pay a respectable amount for the bundle. I cant stand it when a bunch of jackasses steam from the humble bundle.

At least up in Canada, the lowest visa gift card you can find is 25$ and you pay 30$ for it...

That's enough to beat the average on Humble #4 and the next three bundles easily. You could even throw an Indie Gala in there and probably still buy a gift bundle for a buck to give away.

I don't know everyone's financial situation, but it seems like if you've got all the time in the world to sit around on the forums and on Steam, you can probably scrounge up a buck if you try. Feel free to 'prove' me wrong though. :D

So I have a few gift codes that I paid under a dollar for, I usually buy a few to give out to friends who don't have paypal accounts or any way of buying online. Does this mean that when these get activated they won't get the steam keys? That seems pretty low to me.

If you bought them before the announcement, you should be fine. See how they said "starting immediately".

I used to pay above average for my main account, and extras for my friends with a coin (they are grateful for the games, no matter which)

If they keep this up for future bundles, I guess I won't give my friends any more gifts.

For your friends you can send drm-free copy of game.
When you buy bundle for a penny humblebundle.com lose about $1/3.

I'm just surprised it took them this long to do it. I guess the XMAS steam gift pile promo put it into overdrive.

I think they're evolving their model which is a good thing. I thought it was a good logical move to ensure extras became 'beat the average' model, which rewarded people who paid actual money, rather than rewarding early adopters who paid 1 cent. I see how people now will pay 1 cent and start churning out coal by the truck loads to win prizes. Think this isn't possible? Note that in China a prison warden had prisoners work 20 hour days FARMING GOLD in WoW. Do not underestimate the power of ultra cheap labor and cunning people who wan to cheat the system.

top move! even better would be, pay above the average to get them. (imo everyone should be doing this anyway)
why abuse something for a good cause...tsk tsk

That would put off a lot of customers, though

Indie royale has a relatively high minimum price, and I wouldn't buy it (Also partly because it doesn't, as far as I'm aware, give anything to charity)

HumbleBundle has no minimum price, and you can give it all to charity, and I gladly pay above average

This seems like a good idea to me, though it will make aquiring the keys from bundles after they finish much harder

I think they're starting to forget the definition of humble.

Not so much because of this ($1 really is pretty damn reasonable) but because I highly doubt they'll end the policy when the Steam event ends.

And all you people saying you should pay above the average to get the Steam keys (TO THE GAMES YOU ALREADY OWN), you should reconsider what "Pay what you want" means.

It does not mean "Pay what you want, but you have to pay our price to -really- get all the features."

Just, the whole reason I liked Humble to begin with is that they didn't do petty shit to get you to pay more, by withholding part of the deal and other stuff.

It's still pay what you want. And if you liked the HIB because they didn't do petty shit to get you to pay more, you need to see what they've been doing in every bundle: the picture of a sad indie developer and more games have already been involved in the bundle since forever. If they had added a $1 minimum when they first started cooperating with Steam, then I don't think you would have had a problem with it. The fact that they did it retroactively may unsettle you, but if you think about it like that, I don't find it to be a big deal.

Except Steam does events like this, what, twice a year? They know Steam will continue it in the future and that the Humble Bundles can possibly be continued to exploit them so they are perfectly justified in keeping it in the future. Also copies containing Steam keys could be consider more valuable since people buying them would in high probability want them, this will also harm the Humble Bundle black market.

I think what they did is justified. It's to stop the abuse - but you can still get the games, just not claim it on Steam.
