Starting today, CS:GO container keys purchased in-game can no longer leave the purchasing account. That is, they cannot be sold on the Steam Community Market or traded. Pre-existing CS:GO container keys are unaffected–those keys can still be sold on the Steam Community Market and traded.

Why make this change? In the past, most key trades we observed were between legitimate customers. However, worldwide fraud networks have recently shifted to using CS:GO keys to liquidate their gains. At this point, nearly all key purchases that end up being traded or sold on the marketplace are believed to be fraud-sourced. As a result we have decided that newly purchased keys will not be tradeable or marketable.

For the vast majority of CS:GO users who buy keys to open containers, nothing changes; keys can still be purchased to open containers in their inventory. They simply can no longer be traded or transacted on the Steam Community Market.

Unfortunately this change will impact some legitimate users, but combating fraud is something we continue to prioritize across Steam and our products.

This will be significant for trading, where they were a common currency.

I assume TF2 will be next.

Thoughts?

but TF2 keys are still tradeable right? so maybe that means that most of the exchange will go to them

Anyone have an explanation why these are suddenly the most valuable ones? I remember when traders refused to take vanilla keys.

Yes but why is there suddenly a huge demand for 18€ vanilla keys when before they were unwanted? :)

You already explained it. The CS:GO trading community looked down on them because the cases they open are relatively expensive and so people didn't buy them for trading and the amount of those keys tradable now is very low.

That doesn't explain it at all. Anyone who wants to open cases with them can just buy them in-game for 1/9th the price. Only reason to buy them off market is to trade them.

Eh people are just overreacting. it's likely that the prices will go down in the next few weeks and keys will become a collector item in the long run

There is a whole category of collectors of rare and glitched items that hold no value to a "normal" person but have no price for those collectors.

Maybe many think the old keys wouldnt be available anymore because they cant see them on the keypage ingame?!
As far as I know you need a case to buy the corresponding old key... or am I wrong?
otherwise ignorance + stupidity must have no big reason ^^
and as soon as one starts many do the same

Oh shit I got some of those keys in my inventory. Thanks for the heads up. Time to profit!

Edit: omg I JUST put it on the market for $25 and it sold in less than a minute! I have to re-think this now. Should I sell more or hold out for higher price....

Any tips?

Look deeply into a crystal ball and the future will become clear. Maybe split it to be safer, sell 1/3 or 1/2 now and then wait to see if the price goes up or down.

Yea that's what I did. I sold half of them. Got almost $70. Who would have thought the vanilla keys would be worth the most!

Wow, so much for "why trade when you can just buy for 2.50". Ignorance? Or are people thinking tradeable CS:GO keys are the new Bitcoin?

The SteamTrade community is gonna go nuts with CSGO keys on Decline.

Nothing official, but since in the past all changes made for CS:GO eventually got added to TF2 it's only a matter of time.

You see, this is why you need to do your laundry jobs using Mossack - Fonseca, instead of just buying some cheap CSGO keys. LOL

I use Tide. It gets the dirt out and leaves everything smelling spring fresh.
