Pretty cool actually. A lot of times it's really hard to convince friends to try out a niche multiplayer game they have to buy to play with you, and so you end up getting stuck playing only popular games that most people own if you're playing with friends.
It also helps create that natural experience you get with local multiplayer. One person owns the local multiplayer game, boots it up and they can play with others no problem. No one else needs to buy the game just to play.
I really appreciate if developers/publishers do that kind of stuff. I remember games with guest installations, so you could play the game on LAN.
Companies that do that kind of stuff are on my "good guys" list instantly and I am more willing to buy their games full price on release. Other companies are on my "not even for $1" list.
