*tangential thought:
It's gotta be so tough to launch an original IP that's multiplayer only. Which blows, because in the end it's less selection for the consumer.

This genre of asymmetrical multiplayer horror games is really struggling at the moment.
Damned, White Noise 2, and Dead Realm all have no player base.
Even Friday the 13th has a super low population. Dead by Daylight is really the only successful one in this whole genre.
Hopefully Last Year turns out good. It seems to be a hard genre to get right.

If Friday the 13th hadn't launched with so many bugs and connection issues, it would be doing just as well. White Noise 2 is nice, but he learning curve is sort of high. Easy to understand, but higher level players can usually wipe the floor with low level players who are playing the monster. At least that's what my experience was like.
But yea, I'm hoping Last Year does well too.

A large part of the problem though is a lot of these indie devs can't make a fun game in the first place.

It's more that keeping a multiplayer centric game alive requires you to maintain a constant critical mass of players, otherwise a natural bleed-out happens due to people not wanting to queue for 15 minutes+ for a single match. Another big tripping point is when they go through early access, further thinning the numbers as the truly interested burn out long before it is content-complete.

And if you have a fun game you'll be much more likely to maintain said numbers. There's a lot of first time Devs jumping into these early access/multiplayer titles who honestly shouldn't be making games in the first place let alone multiplayer only ones they know full well they won't be able to support/maintain.

+999
see that so often, including arrogantly naive decision to not even provide bots to make&keep it playable

It's tough even for big budget games from bigger studios with some serious publishers pushing on the marketing.
See WH40K Eternal Crusade, For Honor and the likes.
Even genre-starters like Evolve had a hard time and ultimately dissolved into near-nothingness.
When you design a multiplayer-only game, you'll better have a very good idea no one had, or a very polished game. Or a very good marketing department, so even if your game is crap, you will at least break even on release day.

This should be required reading for anyone making multiplayer only games.

Nobody plays on the correct server. 60 people on US servers, only like 10 of them speak English.
Hell, I'm searching in the English region and no one seems to speak English.
Another reason to learn Russian and Chinese if you want to play any online shooter. :D

I've always had this idea in my mind that the easiest way to mantain an online community for one of these games is for the game itself to be built in such a way that verbal communication is mostly unnecesary, a robust but simplistic in-game chat composed of pre-made messages that can be translated to the proper language means that the players don't need to speak the same language to play together. Also some people don't like to talk while playing.

Works mostly fine for Rocket League, you rarelly run into people actually talking or even typing, most just use the pre-baked options. Granted it is a game where comminucation is kinda unnecesary, but maybe small indie teams shouldn't try making games that require huge communities and constant player communication.

this genre is tough, especially considering it's going against Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th.. I'd have probably given this one a try it the price was slightly cheaper.. 9.99 sure a decent price, but for a nearly dead multiplayer only game.. not so much.. Could have benefited from some serious hype prior to release..

Doesn't seem that way this time. For the moment, at least.
As of the time I write this, it peaked out at 2,109 players playing at the same time. It also is currently showing 1,333 players currently playing.

Theres a reason people stopped playing this, but never stopped playing Friday the 13 or Dead By Daylight, whom which i enjoyed very much during the free weekend, a shame i cannot afford it like any other. Anyway, not interested unfortunatly, got my hands full already with for example, Dirty Bomb that finaly, FINALY has become avaivable in my region...just in time for me to miss out on this..Ghostclip event and ranked reason, sigh.

I think the reason why people still play games like Friday 13th and DBD is because you can play them without communicating and still have a good time. Something like Deceit though requires players to communicate... and if they don't it just devolves into nonsense (and not in a good way).
Games that require people who have mics and talk to random people online usually doesn't end up working that great.

This was posted on Deceit's Steam group few minutes ago:
Hey Deceit fans,
At around 4PM UTC Deceit will be going free to play for everyone forever. Around the same time we'll be releasing a huge patch to the game so be sure to hop on and welcome all the new players in the community!
Existing players should also take a look at their inventories after the patch as you'll have a bunch of unique and exclusive goodies for already being part of the Deceit community.
Have fun and good luck out there,
- The Deceit Team.
