Well I just want one that is comfortable, good sound and mic quality, and won't cost me an arm and a leg as I still need to buy a new mouse eventually.

Plantronics aren't overpriced. I have Plantronics Gamecom 380 and I think they are good, they are better in sound and mic than creative fatality hs-800 (that i also have). My brother also has sennheiser hd555 and I've got cx300II so I know what good sound is.

I don't know about stereo headsets, but I'm using a CM Storm Sirus. Really awesome 5.1 headset with its own USB driver (but you can connect it to your own soundcard if you wish.) If you're going for a 5.1 headset, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

If you don't need the USB soundcard, go for the Sirus S.

Audiotechnika M50 with a Logitech desktop mic.

Soundstage is enough to hear your surroundings and their placements.

I have Turtle Beach P11's for my PS3, but they always work great for my PC. Ive never used a headset in my life before that, and when I put these on, the quality of the sound was just absolutely amazing.

I bought them for about $90AUD, brand new, so anything around that should be a decent price I suppose.

I have turtle beach earforce x11, the 360 ones.. I primarily use for pc. I personally don't care for them. They're not all that comfortable (though I'm picky, and I have plenty of peircings, including tragus which gets in the way of so many headphones/headsets), and the quality is okay. The mic I think I've been told is fine, but sound wise it is okay. Can be rather static-y at time, takes up USB and audio/mic jack. And when the control thing touches skin, the audio gets a bit more static-y. (Though I live in a very dry area, so this may be the issue)

They're okay I think, I got them for relatively cheap. I would like a new, and higher end, headset when I can, but until then I'll keep with these. If you can find them for cheap, pick them up. I don't think they're worth 40 or 50$ though, I'm sure there are much better quality ones out there for that pricing. I would look for one that doesn't use usb, but that is just me. :\

EDIT:

I'd look at head-fi.org for any headsets you may be tempted in! I've looked through this post. It may be of use, and I personally may end up getting one of the clip on mics to replace my headset (since I have a few higher end headphones).

Corsair has some -excellent- headsets.

I've heard really good things about the Sony MDR-V6 headphones coupled w/ an Asus Xonar sound card. I've had and read about audiophiles recommending that combination as it produces extremely good audio at a relatively cheap price. For gaming, VOIP, or music.

Although I don't think the headphones have surround sound, so if you're play FPS' a lot or/and play competitively, then you may want something else.

If you need a mic, you can always get an external mic. $15-25 will get you a nice one.
