Spelunky is the best indie game on steam in my opinion. But that's not really much like gta or SR, i agree with LoveRaven, you should wait for some sales.

Have to go with Starbound on this one. Or if you want to fork over another 10 bucks and get Dayz it's worth it. Really depends on your type of play style.

the ones ive loved the most are unique little games, like Papers Please, Little Inferno, Game Dev Tycoon and the like, but yeah wait for sales.

Skullgirls, Bastion, The Binding of Isaac, VVVVVV, Cave Story, Mark of the Ninja, Nihilumbra, Dust: An Elysian Tail... There are too many great indie games out there, just gotta find the one you like the most :)
I specially love Skullgirls, it's a great fighting game with really nice hand-drawn graphics and one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a videogame.

That's a very hard question to answer and everyone is going to have their own "Best indie game".
