In the beggining of the group, they were metal band, i think until the black album, then they change their style a little bit. For me, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1ZxwUlRKQ8 this is one of the best metallica song :p

Yes. Metallica is definitely Hard Rock.
Edit: Also, as far as i know, there is no such genre as "Metal" . There are multiple rock genres that contain the word Metal in their name(Heavy Metal, Black Metal etc..) and they all are...subgenres?? of Hard Rock.

No,
heavy metal most likely came from Blues Rock it's a subgenre of Rock, but every other metal genre is a subgenre of heavy metal.
And hard Rock was originated in the 60´s, if you go back enough to the 50´s hard rock is also a subgenre of rock

Most metal music is musically very different from hard rock, and it would be wrong to label metal as hard rock. Bands like Immortal (black metal) and Nile (death metal) don't have very much in common with bands like Deep Purple and Guns N' Roses.

"there is no such genre as "Metal"
Wow. Just wow. You really need to research more in this topic.
The main genre is Rock, but just as anything, it evolves into more branches.
I really don't see any reason to deny subgenres. It's like when you go to a restaurant and all you say is you want to eat "food". You have to specify what kind of food. Soup? Then you have to tell what kind of soup - tomato soup? Bacon soup? etc.
With your logic we can say there is no such genre as Rock either because there is only MUSIC.
Feel free to take a look this, not the best but kinda sums it up https://thislifeilead.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/image2.png
You just can't call Guns n Roses and Marduk "Hard Rock" at the same time.

Those are all sub genres of metal. Metal has too many sub genres to be classified.

well, at least it's most definitely not a Metal band. Most likely it's Hard Rock, although a lot of their songs, especially newer ones, you can't even put in that category anymore

They used to be more of a thrash metal band in the past, but started changing their sound after Black

You are 25 years late. Metallica hovers between hard rock and metal. But I would say it's 75% hard rock.

And just to add on, there's only a fraction of metal in their music. They're not hard core metal in the line of bands like Slayer and Pantera.

To me, it's none of the above. Metallica hasn't been good since the black album. They need to go back to their roots and rediscover how to play metal. Because now, it's just crap.

To me Death Magnetic was proof that they no longer can make a good thrash/heavy metal album.
It just ended sounding like Ride the lightning Lite version

I'd never label it hard rock, even their ballads are too metal to me. They were from thrash metal to hardcore/pop. No matter how metal they try to be today, they can't sound thrash anymore. Probably because they got tired of it.

They started of as trash metal and have transitioned to heavy metal and hard rock over time. Now they lost the metal part and are just pure trash.

Funny how even black sabbath are considered metal (although granted they were rather heavy for their time) but they sound like hard rockish to modern ears.

Well Black Sabbath is the god father of heavy metal
You have to remember that bands like Metallica came 10 years after Black Sabbath was formed

I like Sabbath bro and as you said they are more rockish then metal but if you listen close you can hear that nobody in that time was playing what Sabbath was playing and beside that they started as blues/hard rock band and became metal

I know that they were pioneers for their time - their sound was very aggressive for the time. It is just that the way music has evolved the same music sounds hard rock-like now because it has moved to bigger extremes (think back metal for example). If I were a granny back then I'd probably proclaim they were devilspawn and should be burned at the stake because they ruin the innocent youth or something similar. :p

I'm not a big fan of rock music, definitely not a specialist so I say nothing about their original genre
I just add here this amazing performance of Hetfield and Queen from 1992 (Stone Cold Crazy, Queen song originally placed on 1974s album) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyVed8lxJs0

here's a lot of Rock fans probably so I just add another link to whole Freddie Tribute concert, stunning event

hard rock are AC/DC.Metallica can't be called hard rock, they may be less thrashy than they where but are still metal.in 2010 i saw the big 4(Metallica,Megadeth,Slayer,Anthrax) and there where many boys and girls that thought Metallica are just a light concert because they have songs like unforgiven, one, turn the page etc.thats until creeping death came as an intro and many got bleeding noses after the very first song.also metal nowadays is more crappy with combination of normal and brutal vocals in many bands(plain shit) so something old school may be considered less metal..

I don't know, but I do remember buying two Metallica songs as cd singles, funnily enough at a time when a lot of their older fans weren't liking some of the newer stuff they were putting out. They were being criticised for their sound becoming more commercial if I remember correctly. I got The Memory Remains and Unforgiven II.

I'd call Metallica 'Suck Rock" or 'Suck Metal'.

And for having some the the least complex music with very few cords in them, they sure do like to sue people who download their mind-numbing crap songs. They are businessmen and not artists.

True story bro.Their first album was really trash and first 3 albums they made were good , obviously because Cliff was on bass and later they were just commercialists (businessmans)
