Actually you can get a DOTA 2 from the gift thingy on steam.
Most people trade their DOTA 2s for games or keep it for themself.

They quit giving extra invites since the holiday sales started. I think they weren't too happy about all the beta trading/selling. The playdota.com keys still give extra invites though just not extra invites from valve themselves by doing the hardware survey.
