Recently I made my second giveaway, after it ended I contacted the winner but there is a language barrier so I had to use Google Translate. I send the gift to his E-mail but he is saying that it is not there, my question is has anyone had this happen to them? Should I next time send it directly to the persons inventory and avoid email gifting? On his steamgifts page it doesn't show he had won anything is that because he hasn't claimed the price yet? Could he have given the game to someone else? I have opened a ticket with Steamgifts but it may take a while for them to get to it from what i hear. Are there precautions i should take next time or how are you gifting the winners? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The winner probably just doesn't know how to claim it. It doesn't appear right away in your inventory, a gift becomes 'pending' until you actually activate it, at which point you're prompted to either add it to your account or your inventory.

do you have it in your steam inventory? if so maybe send it via that? otherwise idk... maybe it's trying to translate the code?

i sent it through my inventory via email address, it disappeared from there 20 minutes after i told the winner he had won.

If that's the case, he already took it, otherwise it'd say your inventory item is still pending, might be trying to scam you, you have to watch out for those sorts on steamgifts

Tell him to learn English or don't enter giveaways on an English site?

how is that helping anyone, it is not like steamgifts screens each user for a language barrier :p

Well If I went to a Chinese site and won something but didn't know how to claim, who should I blame? I mean if he can't understand the language then why go to an english site in the first place?

While the site is in english, the creator of the site has stated that there is no english speaking requirement. The point of the site is for people to send and receive gifts, you dont have to speak x language to do that. Is there a barrier? Yes, but forcing out all the none english speakers out isnt a solution in line with the site's goals.

There is a reason why the FAQ are translated in several different languages. If everybody who doesn't speak (good) English up and left the site, this place would be pretty barren...

I am not asking for someone to speak perfect English, heck I even attempted to use Google translate to work it out with the winner at first but he didn't even try to use google translate. Do you see where I am going with this? if he would have stuck to his language and i would have used English then we couldn't even attempt to resolve the issue. My issue is that he didn't even try to attempt one bit how to resolve the issue, i did all the communicating.

Well, if he let's you carry all the burden of communication, that means he's acting like an entitled asshole - it has little to do with what language he does or does not speak.

Was the giveaway a Steam key, or an actual Steam gift? Keys are tricky, but if it's a gift from your inventory you can go to your inventory and click "view pending gifts" (and from there, "view gift history" if necessary) to see where you sent it and whether it's been claimed.

As for his Steamgifts page not showing any wins, that's normal. It won't show up there until he marks it as either received or not received.

Is the item still visible in your inventory? If so, it hasn't been claimed and you can resend it after confirming the e-mail address with the winner. If not, go to your Steam inventory -> Pending Gifts (top right) -> View Gift History (middle of the screen). It should show when each gift you've sent was redeemed, and who it was redeemed by.

Thanks i just checked gift history and it says its redeemed. The winner is offline atm from what i can see so i can't verify if he received the gift. Ok I just checked his steam inventory and games and the game is not there, could he just be playing coy with me and gave the game away to someone else?

It sounds like he could be screwing with you, yes. That, or something's getting lost in translation and you're just not understanding each other properly. But if you sent the gift to him (and only him), and it's now gone from your inventory and listed as "redeemed" on your gift history, he either redeemed it himself or gave it to someone else. Below each gift in the gift history it should show the name of the Steam user who redeemed it - is it the same guy who won?

As far as not showing up in his inventory: by default, Steam gifts in a user's inventory are not viewable to anyone other than that user. So it could be that it's in his inventory and you just can't see it, or that someone else redeemed it or was given it by him.

In the gift history it just says it was sent to him and it was redeemed, does that mean it was redeemed by that person or just sent to that person?

Actually, that's a good point. I'm not entirely sure. But as long as it shows that it was sent to him you know that you sent it to the right place and it's been redeemed, so if he doesn't have it it's because he gave the redemption link to someone else.

check, check and check. I hope he redeemed it in his account, it would defeat the purpose of steamgifts.

I hope so too. Hopefully it's just a misunderstanding that you can clear up with him, but if it turns out that he really did take the gift, trade/give it away to someone else, and then claim not to have received it, you should absolutely report him to support because that is very definitely a violation of the rules.

If it disappeared from your gift inventory that means he claimed it.
here's what might have happened.
● he claimed the gift but he didnt check mark "recieved gift button" (you should automatically be added as friends on steam if this happened)
● He claimed the gift but choose to store it in his inventory instead of added it to his account and he also forgot to check mark "recieved gift button" on steamgifts.com

If you look on your management page there should be a 'Sent Gift' and 'Received Gift' thing next to that particular gift. You tick the 'Sent Gift' thing once it's sent, and the winner ticks the 'Received Gift' thing once they get it. You only get to see 'Gift not yet received' or 'Winner has received gift' or similar, though, as the creator.

I've always used Steam's in-Inventory gift-giving system, where you can just put in the winner's email address (as given to you on your management page) and that will send it to them via the official Steam system.

As for his page not showing him as winning, I can't answer that but if he hasn't acknowledged that you've sent the gift, that might be why, possibly? Since that's usually what keeps winners 'Anonymous', right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yeah it shows anonymous until it's claimed, I will ask him tomorrow or when he gets back on to log into steamgifts and click receive button. The whole language barrier is not really helping this situation, maybe there should be a trick way of actually signing up to steamgifts where you have to read a short paragraph / sentence and pick an answer out of some multiple choice answers. It would be something super easy but what is stopping that person from using google translate :)

I'd like to know too. What's the advantage of sending via e-mail over adding the person and either sending it to them with "Send my gift directly through Steam" or trading it to them?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Better evidence if the guy tries to pull a fast one. And safer, since the email address was provided by the website, and you can be sure it's not someone impersonating the winner. I usually don't worry about it too much, but it does have its advantages

Permalink

Actually, I feel less confident sending over e-mail. For all I know, it's going to an unknown alt and they can always pretend they know nothing about it. Add them directly from your created page. If they add you, double-check. There's also better evidence if you trade or gift directly.

Permalink

You are told when you sign up to use your real email address. If they didnt, and a gift is sent via email which is fake then thats on them. If they claim they didnt get it, you just show support the email history and that person gets banned for trading away the gift or scamming.

Check to see if the game is in that person's list of games. If it is, to make sure he didn't have it before winning your copy, go to your blotter settings and unmark everything except "Gets or pre-purchases a new game?". Then search the blotter history for his name. If you see "--Name of winner-- now owns --name of game you were giving away--" on the same day you send it to him, then he almost certainly redeemed your gift.

That aside, there's something to remember about the Steam gifts inventory. By default, all gifts are hidden from anyone else looking at your inventory. If a person has no gifts in their inventory, it's impossible to tell whether they really have no gifts or just have their gifts hidden. However, if there are any gifts at all, then the 'hide gifts' option is turned off, and those are all the gifts they have. Thus, if a winner doesn't have the game in their games list, doesn't have it in their inventory (but has at least 1 other gift), and it's shown as redeemed in your gift history, it means the person traded or re-gifted the game they won.

It shows other gifts in his inventory and the game is not in his games list, also the game has been redeemed.

Then post this information in a support ticket. It will take some time until it's looked into due to the current lack of moderators, but when they get to it, there's evidence enough to ban the person for trading away their winnings.

Sounds like he is trying to pull a fast one. If the gift is GONE from your inventory, it means someone has redeemed it. Plain and simple.

Take a screenshot of your gift history and send it to support if he don't mark it as received or don't activate it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This exactly.

From the few giveaways I've done, I've found it's easier to trade the gift to the person through trade or send as a gift through the inventory AND MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE LINKS FROM ANNOUNCEMENT TO STEAMGIFTS PROFILE TO STEAM PROFILE!!, rather than relying on them to get the email. My last giveaway, I had to remind people that they won (and to mark it as received) a few days after I sent the gifts via email.
BUT, if it was a key, I'd absolutely send it to the email address so you have proof that you sent it to the correct person.
