So once you reach level 10 it's basically game over and you get these 100% win rate giveaways and you beat the game? Charity bonus? Good god how bumpy that win rate mountain is, would NOT go hiking there.
Comment has been collapsed.
How so? Could you perchance elaborate? As you seem to be painfully close to level 10, you ought to know something I don't.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've been eyeing higher level giveaways for a month or so now and they don't have many entries, how come you win less these days? Looking at your community statistics (which you unreluctantly and very coincidentally provided) shows that you entered on average 4 times more giveaways before level 4 than in your later years. Seems you've entered fewer and fewer giveaways. Maybe if you pushed those numbers a little harder you'd win a lot more, but if you don't want to that's completely fine too. I believe that is the explanation you needed to your year old little mystery.
Comment has been collapsed.
So what you are saying is the higher contributor level I reach the more 'games' (tax) CG takes?
Comment has been collapsed.
That's not how it works, across 477 level 10 users, there's only been around 8k giveaways, that's about 16 games per person at level 10.
https://www.steamgifts.com/stats/community/giveaways
https://www.steamgifts.com/stats/community/users
I explained the users way underneath, but tldr it just has to do with joining a private group with your friend and trading games between each other. Assuming you can get a few people in on this, you can even farm cv. It's more of an exploit than something to do with the level.
Comment has been collapsed.
Alright then, is something like making an invite-only giveaway and sharing it with a single person not allowed then? Like is CV 'farming' something to get punished for?
Comment has been collapsed.
Nope it's not punishable you can exploit it all you want. I was just explaining why his luck stat shows him getting about 53 more than the average, because most people don't make groups to trade games like these, or they go to the trading version of this site to swap games. But there are some whales here and if you inspect them, you'll see they pretty much all follow this exact same method.
Comment has been collapsed.
actually no, that wouldn't work. you need at least 5 entries for invite-only and group giveaways to count towards your cv.
per the faq:
If a giveaway is invite only, region restricted, or limited to a whitelist or Steam group, it will only add contributor value if it receives 5 or more entries. This is in place to prevent small groups of friends from attempting to cheat the contributor system, and to encourage users to expand the reach of their giveaways. The whitelist feature offers an easy way to target a larger audience, and you can combine it with small Steam groups to receive a greater number of giveaway entries if needed.
Comment has been collapsed.
I was informed of this, thank you for your input.
Comment has been collapsed.
If this confuses you, it's simply because the user is in a bunch of private groups where game trading happens technically, rather than gifting. If you look at his wins and gifted games, you'll notice a ton of very few entries, sometimes 1, so instant wins for him. Compared to the average of the site, someone using this mechanic will of course "win" more games. Unfortunately I think at more than 5 entries it counts for the level, so the user gets to do double dipping as well by leveling up doing this, and also winning public giveaways.
Group/invite only giveaways should've never given cv or counted for stats for this reason imo but I see why CG isn't stopping this knowing that some people will use this site for trading, despite the rules technically not standing for it and that would affect it's population.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't think that it works like that. The probability of winning should be calculated from the number of participants. So if there is only one entry, it shouldn't affect the luck per month. Trading via SteamGifts makes no sense since the one entry giveaways don't give you any benefits.
Group and whitelist giveaways are ok. If you don't want to give something valuable to bots or leechers or to wait 7 days for activation — it's a good way to avoid that. There are a lot of great groups that have common interests or purposes, like helping unlucky people, giving back to those, who contribute a lot, or sharing games only with those who playing them.
Comment has been collapsed.
It wasn't about probability current chance which should work as you described, so if he enters a giveaway as the only person it's 100%, it was about 53 more than average, as the gifts are coming from such groups, so since someone was surprised he won 53 more than the average, then the average user doesn't get in private groups to trade games in between 5 -6 people, so I just explained what the difference is. You could test it right now, make a group with your 5 friends, and just trade the games between each of you. Technically all you need is one friend so you could do this in a group of two, but you need 5 entries to also farm cv. You'll notice your expected gifts won is going to be above the average after a while, especially at around 2.6k won, for the reasons I listed.
I guess one thing I said that I meant to say differently, is CG should've put a much harsher limit on what counts towards these stats, groups or invite only giveaways. 5 entries for CV is not enough to say this is realistic data, and wins from 1 single entry shouldn't count toward average wins since the chances that these happen more than once without someone being in one of these groups are next to none. If these groups or invite only giveaways manage 50+ entries then imo they should be counted towards stats, otherwise not. It wouldn't affect them still winning and trading games, but it wouldn't create misleading data as such.
As for "Trading via SteamGifts makes no sense since the one entry giveaways don't give you any benefits.", this is true, but 5 entries does. So not saying all the games he won are 1 entry only I think I already said this above, but I'm saying it's a very small group that does this with with plenty with just around 5, 6, 8 entries, which allows them to also increase their cv. At the same time, they double dip in public giveaways. They also mostly only make private on invite only giveaways, so I consider them to not participate, but I consider these people leechers, despite you saying they want to give in private groups so their games don't go to leechers.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, ok, thanks for explanation. I still don't completely grasps how it works, but I guess it really have something to do with private GAs and small number of entries then.
Comment has been collapsed.
Comment has been collapsed.
Is it bad that I only really understood 'Something like that' and nothing else?
Comment has been collapsed.
Sorry for my bad english.
Because SG incorrectly calculates the chance of winning. Because of this, the number of “extra” winnings is also calculated incorrectly.
Example. If you entered 10 GAs for different games with 10 participants each, then SG will be calculated your chance of winning with 100% (1/10 * 10). While it will be "only" 65.13% (1 - 0.9^10), where 0.9 is the chance of losing, ^10 is the number of GA.
With a smaller number of participants, the probability of winning will tend to one, but it will only tend. In theory, you should have a 100% chance of win only for GA with one participant - you.
Exactly the same with “extra” winnings. Won in a GA for 10 participants +0.9 to "extra" games, lost in such a GA -0.1 to “extra” winnings.

pretty much. I stopped for a long time because I felt I gained enough and was entering for things I shouldn't while also not giving back enough to balance it. So I stopped, and went off doing whatever, mostly getting humble bundle keys until I joined a community train to dump them.
Which is more or less the pattern maintained now.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's good to be noble but it isn't bad not to be. Giving is giving and it's well appreciated, at least I appreciate it. I'll try to give more back to the community as well but with my current income I won't be able to, but someday.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's no pressure or hurry. That was just my own particular path. I like a balance and when it got too far out of wack, I needed to step back. Plus, it's not like I didn't have other things to play so it was no harm. Things were also different back then as well, with cheaper entry points on most humble bundles (the fabled $1 tier).
Amazon gift cards could be earned from various sites and actually used to buy digital games. They no longer allow gift cards on digital only items like Steam codes.
So you're not earning points in the same kind of era as I did, but there's plenty of giveaways that don't discriminate much as long as you reached level 1, so that's honestly quite enough.
Comment has been collapsed.
People keep talking about the good old days and I am so jealous I couldn't be apart of it. I want to reach level 3 or level 4 in the future at some point, just for the sake of giving.
Comment has been collapsed.
haha, it happens with many things. Origin (EA) once gave out frequent games. Uplay (Ubisoft) once did. There will probably be some point where Epic Games finally stops but I do have to give them props for lasting the longest.
But there continue to be good opportunities for free/reduced things in the future so don't sweat it. If there is one downside, it's dreaded 0 CV factor that can occur just because a game was given away freely once. But that only affects a small portion of giveaways anyway.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's going to be dreadful to give away like RoboCop today and then 2 decades later get your CV for that game reduced to 0 because it was free on Epic games Store for 24 hours.
Comment has been collapsed.
oh well that part I may have misrepresented in my comment. They at least have to be Steam key giveaways to count. That's one solace haha.
So the recent Dead Island Riptide giveaway on Steam won't take away from someone who bought a key.
But when Homefront was given away on Humble 6 years ago, it's 0 CV for life because some people may hold onto keys that long. Which there's no harm in giving away a 0 CV game, I just wouldn't buy a fresh copy of one.
Comment has been collapsed.
I was misleading with that one too, I know you can't give away Steam giveaways and they have to be either Steam keys or gifts or just gifting a game to an individual. I also know that if you have a game key and the game gets given away on another platform for free that doesn't count either.
Comment has been collapsed.
Has nobody done a statistic discussion like this before? Seems like people see this for the first time. People seem to win pretty often from what I see, on and off every few months. 2 years on SteamGifts for you and 0 wins, brutal. If I get any spare game keys I'd love to get you something, least I could do to give back to the community I have grown to love.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think you understood me wrong, I want to get YOU something, if I could at least offer you something in the future for your good deeds I'd be ecstatic.
I mean you have been on SG for 2 years and have 1,500 entries, while I have been on SG for 1 month and have 500 entries, 1:8 ratio of giveaway entries. I really hope you win something cool in the coming weeks or months.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll let you know at some point somehow when I have leftovers, I'll let you choose if you want something and if you insist and are uninterested in the selection, then I won't stop bothering you until you get something noteworthy from me. You deserve it!!!
Comment has been collapsed.
There's all sorts of variables involved in something like this and individual user preferences is one of the top ones.
If I've entered 28797 giveaways and won 63. That puts me at about 1 per 457. Which yes does appear better than your 0 in 1507.
However, of those 63, a few were 10000+ keys. One was 50000 keys, everyone won. More were from being a higher level in the past (smaller pool, lower population). And this is before accounting for game quality (subjective but it matters when you are trying to compare wins). If you ever doubt your own method, just go look at some of those people's wins and see if you'd even want any of what they won.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've seen 100 key giveaways and so on, but 50,000??? I am speechless. You have to somehow paste those keys inside the damn box, how will they all fit??? This is why the perpetual CV system was implemented that for every additional copy you get less and less CV. Very educational comment!
Comment has been collapsed.
Perhaps people who are game devs have an additional way to make it easier on them that comes with the upgraded status. But that's not something I would know about haha.
Comment has been collapsed.
I heard that the higher contributor level you reach the less odds you have of winning, because CG takes most of the games for himself as some sort of 'sanction' or 'tax' and covers it up as just 'games'. I heard it gets worse as contributor levels go on. Just be careful with earning CV. I don't think developers get a bonus for earning CV, most likely decreased if anything because of the amount of copies of the game they can print out. It's probably just a measly tag next to your name, nothing else. Take care!
Comment has been collapsed.
I know part of that is a joke but for the other bit, it's in the FAQ that game developers can request to have an account upgrade of up to 100000 keys. So that's why I don't know what it is like to enter that many keys. They could have a system where devs submit a csv of keys for them to input or something like that. Nothing a normal user will have knowledge about.
Comment has been collapsed.
So what you are saying is that they could generate the keys and feed them straight into SteamGifts for giveaways, or something like that? Man I would be so happy if a game like Stardew Valley or other cozy co-op game had a massive giveaway, that would be so sick. Actually, if there was like 50,000 copies then bots could just enter and steal the keys and sell them on the gray market, but maybe like 100 copies could work fine. You can always dream.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah most established devs if they are going to do a free giveaway just do it on Steam itself because of that exact issue (recent example, Dead Island Riptide). The devs who give here usually need a more personal reason for it like getting some initial reviews for traction and such. But nothing wrong with that when they're a legit dev, word of mouth is exactly what many of them need.
Comment has been collapsed.
Word of mouth can be a powerful thing, as shown by Lethal Company and many other recent games. Something not many games can pull off even with clever marketing.

I would like to see peoples' community statistic charts. I am a sucker for numbers and I was interested how a years worth of SteamGifts charts look like. Snap a picture and send it here if you wish. Any charts work, if you are an active gifter I'd love to see your contributor level charts, but any other will also do. Probability of winning per day chart could be interesting too with you highlighting the highest percentage. If this is a little preach of privacy for people then no pressure, you don't have to send in your charts, this isn't a job application :)
Side note: From now on we will all call nice and steady lines 'rollercoasters' as per this rollercoaster.
