No idea when did they started this, haven't seen an announcement about it either but this is very nice, especially for SG.

Edit: It seems this is related to Steam UI update, See >> https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/k6xmEqM

At least since March 2020. That's the oldest mail I've found. Probably way longer than that since that's also when I started buying games again after a very long pause.

Huh, this is the first time I got such email. I wonder if they don't send it every time.

This surely can be useful for some controversial situations on SG and I don't think I ever saw anyone mentioned this here.

I am pretty sure I've got one for every key activation since then. I have over 3000 of those mails. Maybe it's region / country related? I am in EU so this might have been mandatory for them to do.

It doesn't contain the source of the key nor the key itself so other than confirming the date of activation of a certain product on a certain account, the use is limited. There's also this list:

That makes sense. In this case maybe they started doing this for other regions as well?

Maybe it's region / country related?

That could very well be the case.

I'm in the US, started getting the emails in June of this year, and have gotten them with every activation since.

Interesting. I got the very first one this year on July 27th. And I activate a lot of games. (also EU)

They send it everytime for the longest time.. it's like proof of purchase. Maybe you had something in your profile that you turned off email communication and it reverted back.

I've looked through the email and notification options and didn't find one pertaining to key activations.

I always got emails when I directly bought from Steam but never got for key activations before. I haven't changed any setting though.

It seems we're divided as people who only use client for key activations and people who only use browser for that. :)

I don't remember why I started doing it back then but I definitely keep doing it because of the SteamDB extension. It's just so heloful.

I too have SteamDB extension but never knew it also could be useful for key activations.

Try it out with a key you've already activated:

https://store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey

It names and links the exact sub that key is / was for, so you can check for region locks and bonus apps and so on. Just keep in mind that if the key is still unused and you are eligible to redeem it, it will be redeemed in the process.

Just take the key you won yesterday... or one from your last key / bundle purchase.

Oh it also works for used keys, that's nice to know. It sure is useful then. Thanks for the heads up.

So it isn't EU related. Maybe they randomly chose users and were sending them these emails as a beta state and now they're sending to every one. Or maybe worse, it's a feature that doesn't work properly. :)

I always activate through the client, must be the update. Steam atleast should allow us to turn it off or on.

I always got this. When I first made my steam account, I went kinda crazy with playing feudalife challenge & got like half of my library from free keys from indiegala.
Are you used to buying games directly from store? Or maybe there is an option to send mails or not.

It's been a thing for a few years for key activations in browser. And it's also been a thing for Client activations since the update.

Now THAT makes sense. I almost always activate keys via browser (https://store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey), so I have a LOT of those mails.

Interesting. I don't think I have ever used browser for key activation. That makes sense. So this started with when they switched to Chromium / Electron.

Couldn´t tell you ever since when I get them, feels closer to a couple of years than months tho..
(also EU/Austria)
Used to throw the first ones in the bin till don´t remember who informed me not to!
Apparently it´s actually paramount to keep them as they are your only proof linking the product to your account for everything not directly purchased on Steam. So no nuisance although a lttle 'spammy', but what can you do.. : )

I didn't read the entirety of the thread, but I've been getting those mails for ages when activating on web, not on client. I didn't activate any keys in the client in ages, so I don't know how it goes now.

I'm confused - I have never NOT received an email from Steam when activating a game on my account -- and I have like 2000 games - Is this thread related to something else?

Apparently this was a thing for quite some time but only if you've used browser for activation. Since the last UI change (which they made Steam into Chromium) it started for client activations as well. >> https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/k6xmEqM

I always used client for key activations so I never got such emails before.

I had always received those by email, since I've been using Steam, so... like 5 years or more, at least. I always receive one when I activate a Steam code.

Searching back in my email. I have them going back to at least 2017.
The above comments about browser vs client make sense. I always activate via browser.

Nothing new, really. Oldest of such Emails I still have is from September 5th, 2018. So they are doing this for at least five years now.

I only activate games through the client and never received an email until they just did the last major client update in June. Now I get them with every activation no matter how it is activated. It would be nice if there was a way to disable it because it's just an extra pointless step to delete the email every time, especially if you are activating bunch of games from a bundle.

Region Europe:
I do not know when they have started this, my all mails from Steam goes directly to Steam-folder, i'll never check that.
Untill now, I have about 4400+ unread posts there. Yes I see, there is a post for every game I have registered to steam.
That is good place for those to be! :)

I have been getting those for years whenever I activated a key through the browser, which is most times for me, and recently also when activating keys on the client.
