Steam Key format for Spacechem ( Thoroughly Newbie Question )

I got a key from my online friend in XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX format in a reddit group.. I was wondering If this format of Steam Keys exist? Or is it other platform maybe?
Please don't suggest to add in my steam library and see what happens.. I have a inventory copy of the same game AND this code, so hence I am asking!

Nope. Steam doesn't seem to support that format. That looks more like a GOG key or perhaps an origin key? If you plan on doing a giveaway, i think it's a bad call. There's an orphan key drop thread for any format? Otherwise, good luck with your key. =)

I wont be doing a GA of that key since i am not sure myself! :( I will try origin.. GOG, UPLAY and windows store it isnt i tried!
Will inform if its origin or not! thanks!

I've seen some keys from the HB lately with 16 characters in that format, so it's not very weird. It might be for Steam, but if you don't know where it came from then you can never know for sure.

Does Uplay or Origin even have SpaceChem on their store? Maybe uplay does, though.

Hi thanks for reply! UPLAY doesn't recognize the key i tried! :D Origin is left, i ll do that in a few mins!
The fact that u mention HB gives a few games in that format gives credence to it being steam key.. will keep you posted!

just ask someone on your Friends list you can trust with SpaceChem

There has to be at least 1 person you might be able to ask. If the key works, it probably won't give an error message or it will just ask them to install SpaceChem

You can definitely try it on Steam, if you already have SpaceChem in your inventory. There is no downside.

It can be a Steam key. There are at least three main formats, the 5-5-5 is just the most common. (Not to mention that Steam-eligible game keys used 50 or so formats over the years.)
Granted, the 5-5-5-5 format is nowadays common on GOG, not Steam.

The format in the OP looks to be 4-4-4-4, which is uncommon but certainly possible:
