The free upgrade is a temporary promotion for current Windows users, so you'll need to install a current version of windows first. You'll then be- quite insistently- prompted to 'upgrade'.
Once the promotion ends (29 July 2016, I believe), losing your current install [due to reformatting or hard drive failure] will require you to purchase a full copy of Windows 10 to install it again.

Edit: seems things have changed, recently (this November):

Doesn't explain how you're making that Windows 10 Iso (is it freely available?) in the first place- but either way, that's still utilizing the upgrade for future installs, so that's a cool workaround if they do still eventually remove upgrade access.

If you activate Win10 you get a win 10 generated to your hardware.
IF you want clean install win 10 its no problem if its the same pc, just skip the part with the key and if your pc have internet your win 10 is activated.
or you read out your key with a tool and use it on clean installation.

I just did something like this. As long as you upgrade FIRST, your hardware will be activated by Windows 10, meaning even if you reformat and start from scratch later, Windows 10 will still active after you skip the installation (during the installation you will have to click "skip" for the product key the 2 times it asks you, but once its finished, it will activate.)
Also, there should be an option to remove everything and do a clean install when upgrading.

Hi :)
I heard that you cannot run a clean installation of Win10 and use your Win7 key. Is it true? Someone told me that I have to first run the upgrade, and then I will be able to use my Win7 key in the future whenever I wish to do a clean Win10 installation. Can someone confirm that?
