I feel like Standalone will be much better in a few months, and the mod will lose support from Rocket. The mod already has lots of scripters (hackers) who like to ruin everyone's experiences, and I think their number will increase. Most players will eventually move to Standalone as it gets more features. But you could buy Arma II if you want to try the other things, like the realistic singeplayer, the editor that is full of possiblities, and the different multiplayer gamemodes. But I don't recommend buying Arma II for just one single mod that is going to probably lose it's players in a few months.

I would not buy it anymore. Countless hackers already ruined the game for months and their numbers probably will explode since it's only 4€ now. If you want DayZ, buy the standalone! I'd say it is definitley worth the 24€/30$. The interface and gameplay is much better suited for a MMO, particularly with the new melee system which is really good if you know how to use it properly.
Also the graphics of the standalone version is outstanding compared to ArmA II.
I played more than 34 hrs so far in the standalone with having played hundrets of hours in the mod (dont have it on steam so it's an estimate). I definitely think DayZ SA already is better than ArmA II: DayZ.
But that's just my opinion ;)

DayZ Mod is pure hardcore. If you want to do nothing but die, die and die some more then buy it.
DayZ Standalone is much more user friendly, more stable and easy to pick and play.
Also, main enemies in DayZ are zombies. Main enemies in DayZ Standalone are players.

Sub 7 hours on the mod? Also: Uses steam DayZ Mod version
While it is true that the standalone has oly few zomibes and focuses even more on Plaeyr interaction, the mod is no different apart from there being more zombies, but zombies are a joke in the mod, they can hardly be called a threat.
Apart from that, the loot drop system is still kinda iffy in the standalone and you will face issues like food and medicide, also finding arms seems to be tricky.
In the mod you could be geared up in no time, that was way easier. Calling it "pure hardcore" is just wrong.
The Standalone is more stable? More user friendly?
The standalone has crashed multiple times and even deleted my character saves, because of the unstable servers that seem to shut down very frequently, where the mod servers are more stable and game crashes are rare.
The SA is still an Alpha, so obviously we can expect some fixing, but as of now the mod is more stable, is less noob-hating and has WAY more content.
Apart from that, ArmA II is one heck of an awesome game.

I played Arma II DayZ mod for a couple of hours and it was.... awfully hardcore and therefore unbearable. I really hated it when I was running for some hefty 20 minutes in the middle of bloody nowhere and all of a sudden got shot by another player or something. The only cool experience I had was when me and my friends found a proper car and we went for a ride. That's it. I recommend to avoid this game unless you are a masochist.
