Not really into strategy/management games, so... have a bump c:

Command & conquer series (tiberian sun, red alert, tiberium wars etc.) obviously , i find its sidebar very useful and simple, it actually makes you focus into the game, not into the ui . The UI is just great for those who love fast-paced strategy games
edit: i just realized you meant management games , sorry but at least you got an opinion :D

Well I'm interested in both, strategy and management, all kinds of games where the UI plays a major role in how you interact with the game.
Maybe even card games like Hearthstone or so.
I think I'm looking for clever solutions that display a lot of information at once without having a lot of different icons and overall make an easy to pick up game that allows you to dive straight into it without having to first learn to read the interface.

Sadly I can't really help, haven't played many of those games in the close past.
I remember that rollercoaster tycoon had horrible UI ( menu of the menu of menu, no explanations, hard to find additional popups) and that Cossacks / age of mythology had pretty cool, but IMO standard(ly good) UI and control scene, even if we ignore quickbuttons. But having a grid for buildings / commands isn't a great or unique thing, right? :)

Have to mention Starcraft just because of how smooth it has to be to be useful in competitive gameplay, every keyboard shortcut being well thought out, and for being uniquely themed for each of the three main races.
That said, I really like being able to select literally hundreds of units at once in Total Annihilation instead, and that also had some pretty good keyboard shortcuts for specific selections and groups.
SimCity 2000 felt pretty nice, too. Usually easy to bring up the graphs you wanted with few clicks while not needing to cover the screen with them.
Homeworld did an admirable job of strategic navigation in 3D space.

Also, as an example of non good UI, I've been playing the first Commandos game recently, and I had to write the keyboard shortcuts down on paper. They aren't as intuitive as I'd hope, and although the graphical presentation of the UI is pretty, and kinda cool, it's not helpful for making lots of quick command decisions.

Thanks for the examples, seems like keyboard shortcuts are pretty important to you. I'll try to get a deeper look into the games you've mentioned, I was hoping people would mention more games I already own, since playing them is always the best way to really see how good the UI is. :D

Does The Conquerors DLC have a different UI than the base game? AoE somehow never really managed to impress me.

Let me bump this and take the chance to say thanks for all the examples, I have checked a few of the UI designs but haven't really found what I was looking for. Maybe someone else still has an idea of an exeptional clever/great UI design?

I think Master of Orion 2 has a pretty intuitive UI. It's not the prettiest one out there, but it is surprisingly easy to learn. Its UI would scale up pretty poorly for more complex games though (as far as 4X games go, MOO2 is relatively simple. Simple, but fun). The recent Master of Orion actually feels a bit less intuitive in its interface design, although it is better looking (that game is also quite enjoyable, by the way)

my 2 cents.
UI in strategy & management games are badly designed in term of UX.
honestly how many games you know where the players community goes into creating database and tools site/app to help players life ?
sounds like something must be really missing for some fans to go to all that trouble.
any good software nowdays offer a silk and totally customisable interface. Any software that deal with data permit to build your own request/filter/dashboard (and save them for reuse).
I would appreciate those functionalities to come into games as a standard.

I was wondering what games have really great visual UI design and why. I'm not only talking about layout but also about the style, color etc. If you can include any examples in your answers that would be appreciated.
I'm not so interested in UI designs of games where the UI is only secondary, I'm curious about games where you actively use the UI to manage things.

**A friend of mine is developing a game and has shown me some of the early work for his UI, since its for a D2 strategy game it's quite complex and very cluttered. I was just hoping to find some good inspiration for clever solutions that I could share with him to help him further develop it.
