Thoughts?

Has anyone played both? If so, have input on whether it's worth the EE edition? I'm probably going to skip I and buy II instead (unless I buy the old ones from GOG as a pack).

Wondering about GFX improvements. I'm not looking for cutting edge stuff. Just adjustments to be able to play full screen without visibility issues/bugs.

I don't mind modding a little bit, but I don't want to have to spend hours getting the old games "right" before playing only to have to troubleshoot more later.

Experiences?

According to what I've heard/read, the version on GOG is better with mods than the Enhanced Edition. Not to mention that you would actually own the game(s) and not just have a subscription.

....since when is BG:EE just a subscription?

ALso I generally have to disagree. The folks at Overhaul did great job with the BG1 and 2 updates, with great new characters and some new fun side content, which you can still mod on top of that. WHy you would not get those versions, I can't imagine.

All Steam purchases are just subscriptions. You don't own the game, you just have a subscription/license to play it. DRM-free means you own the game. To my knowledge there's no DRM-free versions of the EE versions so you can't really own them.

If the EE versions can be modded with the exact same mods as the original game, then maybe they're worth getting. However, I read that while the EE versions tried to fix some bugs, they also introduced several new ones and in general they don't enhance the games that much.

You and your subscription arguments.... nothing lasts forever, why do you care so much about this shit? Do you really think that Valve will one day just randomly take away access to all of your games? I doubt it.

If something were to happen to Valve, it is very much a possibility no matter how small. However, with the drm free files from gog, as long as you don't lose the files you will always be able to play the game.

You mean like when they ban you for no reason or like when steam servers are down?

Why are you so upset? I never said that people shouldn't buy games from Steam or anything along those lines. I was just stating the facts. I have over 500 games on Steam so obviously I care very much about owning the games instead of having subscriptions...

Personally I buy games only on/for Steam with few exceptions. If the Steam version has some awful 3rd-party DRM like Tages and there's a DRM-free version available, the DRM-free version is the obvious choice. Also games without any Steam only features like achievements and Workshop are better to have as DRM-free versions in my opinion. In all other cases I'll get the Steam version even if there's a DRM-free version available. No matter how unlikely it is for Valve to take away your games, it's still a possibility.

EE editions are really well done and there is no reason to chose old version over them

In my opinion the modded originals are much better but I really enjoy modding my games so that might be a factor

For now the old modded versions are better but some of the mods are being slowly adapted to the new versions.

... which makes me wonder... Is there a way to find ALL of the CD keys for the games we have in our Steam accounts? Y'know, to have a list as back up in case valve does ever clog up and Gaben's drano-magic cannot fix it...

I should've been more clear. I'm not interested in modding at all, except to get the resolution right (and any associated issues causes by getting it right - buttons, text, etc.).

I'm not really interested in any other kind of modding. The less time I spend doing that (modding) the happier I'll be.

GOG versions handle 16:9 just fine. I have a the retail release from 1999 and it handles 16:9 just fine.

Just fine meaning? Is it native or do things get a bit wonky?

GOG version is superior to EE even without mods. It works just as well on modern systems, nad handles different aspect ratios reasonably. And then you've got various mods...

BG:EE is the future, if u are going to mod it a bit in the future, modders are already making compatible mods for it because it solves many problems that original had to put it simple is more "modder friendly".
Moreover BG:EE in current state is pretty much bugfree - much better than original BG with all unofficial patches.

I played BG over five times over with various modifications and i know what im talking about :D

Thanks again for continued commentary, y'all. I passed on the EE edition in daily. We'll see. I may grab it at a later sale.

Just dreading having to troubleshoot modding the old version and all possible headaches associated with it. But I may do it anyway. :)
