I already posted this in the bug section on the discussion forums for the game, but I thought maybe someone here might be able to help me.

I just installed Epistory - Typing Chronicles and I believe I am having a problem with missing or broken textures.

When you press space to start typing, an image shows up under your character and under some other objects in the game. When I press space, instead of seeing those images, I get a big purple box. I believe this is because of broken or missing textures. I added two pictures below, the first showing what it is supposed to look like and the second is my screenshot.

I am running this on Windows XP, but they do list XP as being supported. The only other time I have ever experienced this problem is on a single Counter Strike Source map. Out of the hundreds of maps I have played on, there is one that is broken and colored purple.

Windows XP SP3 (DirectX 9.0C, Shader Model 3.0)
Intel I5 3570k
Nvidia GTX 580
4GB Ram

Edit: Things I have tried since opening this thread, but did not solved the problem:
Updated to the latest Nvidia driver
Reinstalled DirectX
Verified game cache
Tried setting -force-opengl as a steam launch option
Tried launching game in all available resolutions in full screen and windowed mode
Tried all game quality settings available through the launcher
Tried lowering all quality settings manually through the Nvidia control panel
Checked VRAM usage (played for a bit and it only used 325 MB of the available 1.5 GB)
Started a new game
GPU usage and temps are low

I tried that. If I launch the game in fullscreen, I can hear the audio for the game menu, but the entire screen is solid black. If I start it in windowed, it does the same except the entire screen is the same pink/purple color that is in my screenshot. Had to close the game both times through task manager.

Reinstall drivers
Verify game cache

Just a couple ideas, I'm not a computer expert.

I just installed the game, but I guess I can verify the cache. I really don't want to reinstall drivers unless I have to. Can the drivers be a problem when I play lots of other games without any problems? The only other time I have ever experienced this is with a single counter strike map and I play on hundreds of maps without a problem, so I think it just has something to do with the way that map was made, something is incompatible with something I am running. Maybe I need to update my GPU drivers to a new version. I have been running the same one for years, but I have kept it because it has always worked for me, till now :)

Maybe I meant update instead of reinstall. Those are the most common ways to fix stuffs, other than "turn it on and off again".

I verified the cache and that didn't work. I'll probably end up having to update my drivers.

Since it seems I am a computer expert after all, I can definitely 100% diagnose your problem of not having enough RAM. You should download some right away. I personally recommend this site http://downloadmoreram.com/

My 32 bit operating system can only address 4GB of ram and I have reached that limit. I need a site to download more address space.

I'm actually running 8GB, but the other 4 is a ramdisk.

I seem to like outdated stuff :)

Windows XP (2002)
GTX 580 (2010)
Firefox 17.0.1 (2012)
AVG Free 2012
uTorrent 3.3 (2013)
Nvidia driver 335.28 (3/17/14) (driver now updated to 368.81 from 7/14/16)

Edit: Those outdated drivers seem to be one of the newest things on this computer :)

Nvidia's drivers often screw up the performance of their old cards, it might not be a bad idea to use old drivers for them.

Does the problem happen with a new game? Possible your save file got corrupted.

I'm not currently running an old Nvidia card, it's one of the things people have been complaining about for years.Maybe it's BS, I don't know
Every time a newer line gets a working driver update, the older lines, ex. the 600s get a performance downgrade.

Just to be sure, re-install DirectX 9.0c, and restart the computer.

I have read that before and that is one of the reasons I have never updated my drivers because I have never had a problem with the one I was running and didn't want to cause any.

Sorry to hear that. You should consider upgrading operating systems. Or try setting it to Wumbo.

Comment has been collapsed.

Could it be the OS? It says XP is supported and other than those textures not being displayed, the game runs fine. I was thinking maybe it has something to do with Windows XP only supporting up to DirectX 9.0C, but again, they say XP is supported, so I don't know.

Also, what is Wumbo? I tried looking it up and only found a reference to SpongeBob SquarePants saying it is the opposite of mini.

I really don't know if that would help. Yes, Wumbo is a spongebob reference. It's just a silly suggestion for when you're out of ideas.

I don't think it's a problem with the OS because I have never had a problem with any game I have ever tried to play as long as the game supported 32 bit operating systems and everything else in the game works fine. I obviously don't know for sure, but that is how I feel from my experience with all my other games.

Is your GPU OC?

Yes, but it is very stable and has never caused a problem. I just set it back to stock and tried it, problem still there.

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe check temps, and clean it if needed (Thermal grease, etc).

Or clean registry and try to do black magic, reinstalling etc.
Or reinstall OS

But I still thought are settings issue, Nvidia panel, OC software. In the worst of the cases your GPU is going to die, but don't think so.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

GPU is only being used about 30-35%, temp only got up to 58C. I think the GPU is fine, it's runs much higher demanding games at 100% usage and 75-80C with no problems. I don't have any artifacting or problems in any other games.

Yeah, I need to upgrade, but I have been holding off because I have been running XP for so long and I am use to it. I'm not really worried about microsoft support, I always kept updates turned off anyway and only updated once every year or two. I think I just need to update my video drivers.

Do you turn on anti alias in both games and gfx setting (nvidia) ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nvidia was set to "application controlled". I set it to "off" and that didn't help. There is no setting in the game for it, they only offer a main quality option each time you launch the game. I just tried every option from the best to the worst and none of them had any affect.

My card is 1.5GB and considering how fast the game loads from my standard HDD, I doubt I am filling it. I will turn on Afterburner to monitor it and see how much it says I am using.

I have had the card for almost 3 years. I bought it used, but I don't think there is anything wrong with it. This game only runs it around 30-35% usage and I have no problem running much more demanding games at 100% usage. No artifacting or problems of any kind in other games.

Looks like some shader or canvas issues, that obviously have been fixed in newer versions.
Of course you meet the system requirements, but maybe not on the drivers or DirectX side.

Stuff like this is the main problem why there are always new and larger driver releases when new AAA titles come out.
Some devs just can't handle the hardware, think they can just mess around with shaders and Nvidia/AMD have to throw in a lot of exceptions.

So, upgrading to at least Windows 7 might be a good idea, but I can't promise that newer GPU drivers and DX version could help.
VRAM is not an issue, this isn't Fallout 4, look at those textures, they don't need much. :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I already updated to the latest Nvidia drivers and that didn't help. Someone mentioned VRAM, so I checked it and it was only using 325 MB.

Someone else mentioned reinstalling DirectX. I guess I can try that, but I don't have high hopes of it doing anything.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Updating is meaningless, when you can only use legacy drivers, if the problem has been fixed in newer versions, which are only available for Windows7+.
If their engine (could be unity) is using DirectX 10 or a newer OpenGL version than this problem is only solved by using a newer OS. (Open GL might not be a problem here, but Direct X could.)

I think that mentioning Windows XP in the system requirements is wrong and untested, because it's a newer game and Windows XP isn't supported anymore.
On the other side, you could maybe post your problem inside the forum for the game on steam or file a bug issue.

I don't know exactly how updates work, but Nvidia is still releasing new drivers for this GPU. Are you saying that I won't get certain updates even if they release new drivers for my GPU? The driver I just downloaded is from 7/14/16.

Because they listed the game as being compatible with Windows XP, I am assuming it works with DirectX 9. If it doesn't work with DirectX 9, then there is nothing I can do. I already filed a bug report with the developers, hopefully they will look into it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

argh, my bad. I read above that they are from 2014.
Also thought they have already put the 500 series into legacy, but they haven't.

Version: 368.81
Release Date: 2016.7.14
Operating System: Windows XP
Language: English (US)
File Size: 209.79 MB

So, there shouldn't be a problem, except for DirectX.
The API could be compatible to DirectX 9, but maybe not on all feature levels, which would cause the pink mess.
Only the devs could answer you that.

I won't be upset if they don't fix it. I am running a really old OS and need to upgrade. I have plenty of other games I can play in the meantime :)

I'm surprised how many games actually work on XP. I find a lot of newer games that don't even list XP as being supported on Steam and they work fine.

I don't own the game so I can't check on my HTPC (GTX 570 in it), but I suspect it's either the game or your operating system (XP? Holy cow!), or a combination of both. :X

Even if I did own the game, my HTPC is on Windows 7, so I still couldn't check anyway. ;_;

It's most likely a problem with not being compatible with Windows XP or DirectX 9 even though they say it is on Steam. I'm not that worried about it anymore. I reported it to them as a bug and I will just wait to play the game till they fix it or when I upgrade to a new OS. I have plenty of other games to play :)
