No idea. Did you try running Steam as administrator?

Kill the process in a process explorer and try again.
The next step is to nuke Steam by deleting everything except the steam.exe and the steamapps folder (and the skins, if you have it). Then start the executable again. This starts the self-repair process.

Don't be afraid, Steam self-repair is actually quite fast and reliable. (This is one of the few things they didn't manage to ruin yet.) The only downside is losing the userdata folder, so all cloud saves will re-download when you start the client again. (But keeping it sometimes keeps the problem with the client too.)

I would still shut down avast for a second or two to cross check, if it's firewall related. Other than that, can you check via task manager if steamwebhelper is running, as far as I know, the steam client needs it. If it's not running you might want to repair your installation by reinstalling the client.

It may sounds irrelevant but what OS do you use? ( 7 or 8 or 10) and do you remember between the last time stream working and now what chances do you have on your pc ( new programs, new update, uninstall something,...) ?

This should be listed as General or Off-Topic. I had the same problem, it went away by itself, try reinstalling the files.

Well, I have this weird problem - my steam client has been down for a couple of hours - no error message it just keeps loading endlessly. But Steam works perfectly fine in a browser, I tried resetting steam client and computer several times but nothing changed. Other programmes work ok. Any ideas what's wrong guys ?
