"One library - Import all your games from PC and consoles, build and organize them into one master collection."
"Game launcher - Install and launch any PC game you own, no matter the platform."

They apparently play on their existing strengths, known name, drm-free, privacy respect, no spying on you... to get ahead of existing competition like playnite (which is free/open-source, btw, but some are not)...

TBH, I find the existing Galaxy client a bit confusing, but it does work when you get used to it's ways. This upgrade might be a good thing.

As I don´t have GOG can someone explain how will their launcher work?
You just add games from Ubi Origin Steam and then don´t need to login to those accounts is that it?

Works as an optional launcher for drm-free games from your gog account. You can download them manually and install/run without it, but if you use it, you also have feed, chat, achievements for many games and so on.

Now they announce v2.0 with some additional features.

As @NB264 mentioned, you only need a GOG Account. In the web browser itself after you've logged in, you can directly download the game to Any computer! That's how DRM works, the accessibility and the ease of service. You do not need to install their launcher nor have to be online after downloading. You can just play the game after its install. :)

And it plays normally just as if it was on Steam Ubi or Origin?

It is as if you get a game on a cd.

Totally, I am not sure how the update/patch goes. If you to update, you may need to use the launcher. I've played most only the 1st Mount and Blade on it. The ease of download may get you hooked and wish if only all services were like that.

Cons of GOG is there is limited/curated amount of games on the site. Not everyone is readily to give up their DRM instead incorporating DRM-programs such as Denuvo to control the content from leaking which may result in performance issues for some and data-mining of your activities. Some games also update slower on GOG as Steam still is the leader in the pack so that is the focus. The update will come but on a later date.

GOG also frequently have sales, depending on your currency it might be worth. They do not have localized prices which was do away, compared to Steam. They are owned by CD Project which owns CD Project Red, the makers of Witcher series. Certainly, worth checking out and picking up 1-2 games of your liking to see if the site suit your needs. Cheers~

Contrary to what the others said, you will definitely not be able to avoid installing and logging in to Steam, Ubi and all those, if you want to launch something on those platforms from the GOG launcher. Maybe the login can be automated but still their rules and mechanisms (online-ness) apply and can not be circumvented, GOG galaxy will ofcourse be operating within their restrictions.

Not many that would provide a text only list of your games (you scroll through 8000 boxes on steam….) and with Gog Galaxy 1 atleast they don't either, and it doesn't look it with v2 either.

This does have a text list, and you can add steam, gog etc. https://www.launchbox-app.com/

Just click on Detail View on top right instead of Grid View in Library, never even tried those boxes so had to check what are you talking about.

Yeah okay but it still load (big) game pictures to the left of it (unlike steam), which is fine with just 400 gog games or so, but if you got loads of games, not so handy.

to merge all game libraries into one launcher

If this gets done well enough, I might abandon Steam's client completely.

Permalink

I don't think you get those games for free though. I mean, that would be great but GoG would lose money that way.

Permalink

I didn't mean that. Sorry if it came across that way.

If it manages all DRMs together in a sufficient way, then I'll leave Steam's client for GOG's client. Client being the program itself, where you have the library and so on.

I dont use gog much but yeah i think what they are trying to do is huge. If they do it correctly i will pretty much stick to gog and avoid all the other launchers.

Permalink

The issue here is that no one's ever managed it.

I'm guessing we'll be lacking installing games, direct access to community hubs and achievements, importing categories and so on. If those things aren't done, then it'll be as huge as my dick. There are other services that already do that little. But if GOG does some weird wizardry, then they have me using it and consequently probably buying from them at times as well.

This is massive, it'll be great if they managed to launch it successfully. I heard of playnite but know little about, didn't want to delve into it without it being more matured. Therefore, I can't really compare the 2.

I think you need to include these Quotes from the page in your OP:
"One library - Import all your games from PC and consoles, build and organize them into one master collection."
"Game launcher - Install and launch any PC game you own, no matter the platform."

Basically, its cross platforms which include console games too. Being a user of only official launchers and not being a console player, I do not know if there are other launchers that are cross-platform, together incorporating your game collection. I've also replied, retweet and liked the tweet on their Twitter!
Regards and Cheers~

Helpful indeed, and it highlights all the hurdles these launcher launchers face. I won't be using any of them anytime soon and I don't have high hopes for GOG galaxy 2, because it will also have to obey the rules of reality.

Question: would this work like gog connect, so I could add my steam games to gog and download them for offline use forever?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"Forever" would mean GOG would have to remove or circumvent Valve's DRM for games that aren't on GOG itself. So no, it can't work like that, unless they want to get DMCA'd out of existence.
