First of all, trust me that there are countries with much smaller wages and much more unemployment. xD But ok, I know, that's not the purpose of this thread. So, what I do when I'm feeling down? I never had myself feeling sad, to be honest. Being with friends or a partner can usually help you to cheer up though. Some foods have the ability to cheer you up too (trust me, I'm a food technologist :P ). Hobbies can also help. I usually like watching sports. Do you have a hobby?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I know. That's so sad. People work their asses off to get an education and then you're just stuck there are the Buerau of employment because you're over-qualified for a low-level job and can't get a job in your field since you have no connecctions...
Yup, I knit. Just got into it recently and I'm loving it. It's an expensive hobby so I don't get to do it a lot but I love it! So far I made 3 headbands, 6 scarves and 1 hat :D
Tell me about your job, it sounds really interesting and I always want to learn more about food. So far I've seen that eating grains and dairy makes me feel bad, both psychologically and physically. Is there anything to it or is it just my imagination? :)
Comment has been collapsed.
It's awesome that you can knit, so why not sell afterwards the things that you knit? ;) Grains and dairy aren't really that helpful. Calcium is mostly needed in babies, not when you get older than that, that's why animals stop drinking milk after growing up a bit. The fermented dairy products though, like yogurt, are extremely necessary, so keep consuming them without fear. ;) Grains can help you being healthy, but their disadvantages exceed their advantages. Fungi love grains, so grains tend to exceed the limit of mycotoxins too many times. Other than that, if I remember well, molluscs, chocolate, nuts, and fruits (especially bananas), can make you happier. There are more foods that can make you happy, but my memory isn't the best. xD
Comment has been collapsed.
Great! I've been right about my food intake all along! It's so good to know :D
I used common sense when deciding on it- if no adult animals, besides humans, drink milk then it can't be all that good/necessary for us either. Also, bacteria, as far as I know, love milk and sugar so I cut those out to since I don't want them to be happy in my body :D
As for the grains, I just noticed I feel much, mmuch better when I don't eat any and sticked with it. I had no idea that fungi love them
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, fungi tend to go where bacteria can't survive and that's mostly dry foods. And some fungi produce mycotoxins that are far more dangerous than people think. Bacteria love milk and sugar???? How exactly? o.O Milk usually has its original bacteria and probably some aflatoxin M1, but heat treatment can destroy the bacteria (not the aflatoxins though). Microorganisms that can survive in sugar are much more different than the others. Actually, spices have even more dangerous microorganisms. Anyway, still, sugar isn't dangerous because of its microorganisms, but mostly of the ability of glucose to cause diabetes, only if you eat too much sugar of course. :P Just stick to more vegetables and fruits. But about foods that improve your mood, I told you above about them.
Comment has been collapsed.
He meant the good bacteria.
You have trillions of bacteria on you. And most of them help digest the food.
It's the minority that causes problems...

You are a hell of a lucky man if you've never felt down. I guess that's why you are TheLuckyShamrock ;D

I'm just not of the sensitive type. :P I'm mostly an unfeeling person. We all have some bad experiences along the way, but what matters is to not give a f*ck about it. xD Past belongs in the past and it CAN'T affect the future, unless you allow it. ;) May the lucky shamrock be with you and help you too. ;P

..and still get paid the miserly 300€
When I get like this I usually head to eBay to buy some stuff
Wait, so you feel bad because you are not earning much, and to feel better you waste your money on crappy stuff from ebay? That isn't very smart, lol
Just try to get another job, it doesn't matter if it's something related to what you studied (atleast for now), you will eventually get the job you want, and once you get some experience on it, it will be easier to find other things. Currently I'm in a similar situation, I studied electrical engineering but I haven't found any job for me (no experience at all).
When I feel like that, I just play videogames :p

Heeey, I only spend 0.99$ on a nice piece of shiny/fuzzy/pretty crap that'll have me looking forward to it arriving for 2 weeks and bring me joy when I get it. In my book 0.99 is not a big price for 2+ weeks of joy xD
Getting another job would mean me not getting the one year work experience which is a requirement for getting a teaching position. And there's no way I'm getting a real job to get that experience without some serious connections (which I don't have).
Me too. I mean, besides eBay. Skyrim of The Longest Journey are my go-to games :D

You see, I took after you but, instead of sharing it with just one group of people I'm dumping it on the entire population of SG forum xD
Don't worry, I'm not really depressed or anything like that, I'm more in a "eeeeh, why meeeeee?" spoiled brat mood.

Well, some things goes without saying (and really the evidence is all here, just look at how many remember you (in a good way) despite you not posting as much as you used to, I don't there are many here who would be able to do the same and still be as remembered)

You know, you saying that means a lot. Even if it's only partially true. xD
Yeah, a lot of amazing people posted here but most of them were just being kind to a stranger and had no idea who I am or that I was around ever before.
This community is so very dear to me so people even kinda remembering that I exist makes me feel really happy, even if it is a small percentage.

Oh that's so sad man! You're absolutely not stuck up. If I become jobless after I finish my education, which is physically and psychologically breaking me, I'd feel like that too. I have one more exam this Friday and the amount of tears and sweat I've shed for this isn't normal. I have blisters everywhere from writing all day, nightmares when I sleep, my social life has gone to hell,... So yeah. I don't know what to do when I feel down. Just crying probably, as I'm crying right now.
I really can't give you tips about your job sadly. The skyrim pendant is really cute though!

Ah you're the first one to notice that it's really a Skyrim pendant! I'm loving how they're trying to pass it off as a Targeryen pendant xD
Yeah, I have a permanent blister/bump from writing with a pen on my middle finger (I press my pen on it while writing). I just call it my "academic finger" xD
And thank you very much for your understanding <3

Omg I have written an entire essay but I lost internet connection when I hit submit. Anyway it's actually my last exam this semester and it's just ridiculous. I have to memorise 700 pages of chemical molecules and on the exams we get some random 8 and I need to say what class they belong to, give the chemical mechanism, what they're used for, side effects,... I'm not allowed to not recognise one :s. I've just accepted the fact that my chance to pass is not that high. But I can't help crying bout it because I'll go from the top 10 of my class to the absolute bottom. And I I fail I'm not allowed to start my internship in July :(. Anyway enough complaining
What have you studied?
Comment has been collapsed.
Chemical engineering (and before that history, but that hardly counts as studying).
Sounds like you're doing organic chemistry or biochemistry right now. When it comes to figuring out what mechanisms the molecules are apart of, it's easier to just learn the rules of the common reaction mechanisms than to learn how different classes of molecules react.
And don't worry about being the best in your class, it will only wear you out. I was the best in my class for exactly 3 exams, after that I figured that the amount of stress it put me through was not worth it, and future employers won't really care if I got an A or a C in a course anyway, so I started treating grades like a binary system, pass or fail (and I refused to tell anyone what my grades were after the first 3 exams). I'm of course not saying that you should aim for just passing the exam, that's dangerous, but don't worry too much about your exact grades. And I've had no major issues getting interesting jobs, because employers do indeed not care what your grades are, the important thing is that you can show that you're willing to learn new things.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah nice! I'm currently doing my master in medicine development: Pharmacist. And this subject is called medicinal chemistry. It's like a mix of organic chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology. Yeah I know I shouldn't care much about my grades. But they're like everything to me. I am completely useless when it comes to anything else :(. I keep telling myself it'll be fine if I fail, it wont be the end of the world. But I'm such a perfectionist it'll be such a terrible blow. And yeah I just want to pass atm. But the problem is you have to know them all. So it's basically already a binary system.
sighs I'm just really sick of all this studying. I've been stressing out since November with my labs and reports and I already failed pharmacy labs probably. I just wanna lay on the ground and stay there for a day. All my friends have already done the exam 2 failed and 3 passed. I'm afraid I'll be the third person to fail so it's even. It's just a really unfair exam since every group gets 8 different molecules. You just have to be lucky to get 8 of 500 you studied well. In the past years he used to ask about the same questions on a yearly base, so everyone just studied these molecules well because they're like the most relevant ones. This year however he picked completely new ones randomly.
Comment has been collapsed.
I am completely useless when it comes to anything else
I'm sure that's not true. If you're good at organic chemistry, biochemistry, medical chemistry and all that stuff, it means that you have a good analytical mind. One does not get great grades in subjects like these by simply studying, there's a good bit of actually understanding what's going on behind the information as well. And a good analytical mind, well, that can be applied to a lot of different things, from just being good at board games to more or less any academic field. You also probably have a far better than average memory, and that's always useful. Heck, having a good memory has helped me in a lot of social situations. You just need to believe in yourself, because once you start looking for things you're good at, and you go in with the attitude "I'm probably good at this", you'll probably find a lot of things.
Comment has been collapsed.
so much so what Fnord wrote. also dappled in Chemistry... never try to memorize, try to understand
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah I'm quite good at mechanisms. It's just the "place this molecule" part that is impossible. For example you get promazin. You have to say it's a D2 - antagonist, antidopaminergic, diarylalkylamine, non-selective compound, aminergic messenger, GPCR receptors,... Like you have to list every sub sub sub sub heading in the course. Which means you gotta memorise it. But it's 700 pages and I started way too late and I'm feeling so depressed. And if you don't know where one molecule belongs you fail the exam. Like how unfair is that??
Comment has been collapsed.
no said it should be fair.
i never memorized even if they wanted me to. decided that the extra few points weren't worth the effort and got 80~
or even less
now, as a TA, i try to make the exams more understanding and not remembering, not always an easy task.

When I feel down, I tend to get really passive. Sit indoors, play games, drink tea and that's about it. It's "comfortable", which is why I gravitate towards it, but what I really should do is try to find things to do with my friends. Playing games and drinking tea is what I normally do when I have nothing "important" to do, it's just that when I'm feeling down I don't seek out other things.
It's interesting just how different it is between our two countries when it comes to finding work as a teacher. Here they're desperate for teachers, there is a severe shortage and many teaching positions are held by people who really are not allowed to teach due to lack of education, and it's only getting worse. Still people don't want to become teachers, because the ones who are well suited for the job know that they can get a far better paycheck if they study something else (a teachers paycheck is not terrible, it's just that for a 5 year long education, you should make a lot more).
I hope you find a good job soon. And having a proper education should at least mean something. It's a nice thing to have on your CV, and it shows that you can take responsibility.
Comment has been collapsed.
Same here, I tend to pull into myself and avoid any human contact. Which makes it even harder to get back out there and start doing things that might cheer me up and make me like the RL. xD
Thank you, honey for pointing out the good things about having it on my CV. In Croatia we mostly joke and say that our degrees are a good placemat for tables when you're waitressing xD
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, anything that shows that you have some applicable skills is valuable. People often scoff at degrees because you don't always end up working in the field that you studied to work in, but any employer worth their salt will know that having a degree in a field that requires a bit of effort (so not history For the record, I studied history before I studied chemistry) means that you're able to take responsibility and you're able to and willing to learn new things. While you try to find a job that you want, why not see if you can find a job in a semi-related field and hope you can get the contacts needed to find one in the field you want to work in?

No- it's hard getting fresh enough produce for that, and I generally try not to stock things that go bad fast, either.
But if it weren't for that.. sure, I love veggies, and eggs go with most everything.
No strength of will required. :)
Of course, I'm a vegetarian, so..

I only eat cheese and sour cream as far as dairy go. There's soy milk/etc for the rest. :X
Rice, beans, nuts, seeds, and soups all compose a lot of my diet, but I do eat a lot of grains and grain products as well. :X
My only complaint is about my diet is that I eat very few fruits [as I noted, local produce selection kinda sucks, and I try not to get things that go bad fast, which fruits generally do.].. :/
There's also plenty of meat substitutes, and imo, they taste quite good- but I also love soy, so..
I actually can't eat most meats anymore, they make me ill, so, y'know..
It's good to like what you can eat, eh? :D
I occasionally do miss hamburgers, italian sausage, pork, lamb, or fried chicken though. :X

Yeah, I can walk during the summer normally, but during the winter it's a bit dangerous for me to take longer walks as one wrong step would leave me bed-ridden for a week. I have schiatica (veeeeery ensitive to cold weather), several torn muscles (from back when I did a lot of sports), all of my joints have... I don't know what's it called in English... lthe tissue that holds them together ruined and the the tendons in my feet jump out of place quite often if I don't pay attention to how I walk and sleep.
Basically, I'm a mess because I worked and exercised too hard in my teens.
Comment has been collapsed.
that is a major bummer.
what about home workouts? something simple to stimulate yourself

Yeah, tried that but the problem is I can't restrain myself and I mentally go back to my sports-training days so I end up lying in bed for a week because I overworked myself. I just HATE those stupid joints! You can't do anything because of them

There are plenty of good food you can make that's good for you, and not very expensive (and probably more filling than eggs & salad). Lentils are super cheap, filling, and not bad for the waistline. Also, try to make a chili stew with a lot of celery. It fills it out nicely, is super cheap, and tends to take on the taste of whatever else you put in it.

Paleo is basically- if you can eat it raw or it's meat and eggs you can eat it. I do a milder version of paleo where I eat things (but veeeery rarely) that need to be cooked first, like beans or peas.
Not saying that you can't cook and eat a carrot or other things you can also eat raw while doing paleo, it's just the simplest way of knowing which foods are permitted.
Comment has been collapsed.
You would be surprised by how many there are out there who don't know the most basic foodstuff. Anyway, here is a recipe that I used:
~1kg beef (the kind that needs to be cooked for a long time, so it's the cheap bits)
2 onions
2 medium sized-large carrots
8-10 celery stalks (can add more, but then you might need some more spice and liquid).
10 cloves of garlic
3 "normal" red chilies (nothing fancy, can be any medium sized type)
3 chipotle-chili
2 tablespoons ginger
2 cans of crushed tomatoes (can be fresh, but then you need to add more liquid)
1 tablespoon honey
1 dl red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon oregano
2 red bell peppers
Let it simmer for about 3-5h. Don't add the bell pepper until ~1-1,5h before it's done.
Comment has been collapsed.
honey really?
i add a few sliced of Liver. chopped up. adds flavor (not a fan of bacon)
and you forgot the red wine, the better wine, better taste ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
vinegar is not wine. not even close
yes, bad wine tastes the same, but good full bodies red wine in your stew is amazing
Comment has been collapsed.
It's so expensive though :( I don't drink wine normally (don't like the taste, the exceptions being some really high end wines, but then I simply don't think it's worth it), so I don't know what's good or bad, and the "cooking wines" that they offer in my local store don't taste good.
Comment has been collapsed.
you can't cook with cooking wines. they are crap
i'm usually buying the 10$ price tag (there are wines at5$) and use them for cooking.
although, i've cooked with 20$ bottles before ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
Anything containing alcohol is quite expensive over here. I suspect that a $10 bottle of wine would be ~15€ around these parts, and we don't even have $5 bottles here (cheapest is about 75 sek, so roughly 7,5€).
And wine is still the cheapest way to get drunk (highest alcohol per krona (talking about APK is quite popular among university students)).
Comment has been collapsed.
you don't have cheap fake taquile?
thats what kids here do (yes kids... sad)
Comment has been collapsed.
You mean the clear stuff that tastes like solvents? Yes, though it's still expensive (and it's mainly people in their 20's that drink it when going out. Kids do also drink it just to get drunk, but they are not the main target demographic). A shot of solvent/tequila will set you back ~5€ if you're in a bar.
Comment has been collapsed.
same here in a bar...
but in the local cheater (store) it's 20 shekels = 5$. for a liter.
sometimes the price already includes orange juice or something (also fake)
Comment has been collapsed.
$5 for 1L? That's really cheap, I think a ½L bottle will set you back about 150 sek here (that's ~15€), though I've never actually bought a bottle, so I might be off by a little on the price.
edit looked it up, 15€ is at the very lowest end of tequila prices, the common one that people tend to drink costs 20€. Considering how terrible the 20€ one is, I don't even want to imagine what the 15€ tastes like, but it must be really bad, as people seem to avoid it.
Comment has been collapsed.
fake taquila. but yes, that used to be the price. i'm not updated anymore, and they raised the taxes in the last year on alcohol (those bastards), then lowered it (but it remained high prices, those bastards)... i guess it's not above 10$
Comment has been collapsed.
But alcohol is good for your diet!
Didn't you heard about thermodynamics?
Beer is cold. And you spend calories heating it up after drinking, which is more than the calories inside... Hence, beer is good for you!
disclaimer, it's a joke i heard ten years ago, and probably massed it up. Don't judge me for liking beer
Comment has been collapsed.
You have a point! Beer it is then! And those bubbles certainly make it harder for the stomach to digest so some energy must go on catching them too...
Seriously though, severeal years ago for 3 days I had nothing but beer and duing that entire month I had less than 10 real meals due to all the alcohol I'd been having. It was a loooong drinking-binge and I lost weight like crazy xD

It depends.
how it worked for me:
tl;dr barely 1 hour of free time.
maybe in a situation like this someone could be able to work every then and now, maybe during weekends
but a full time work would bring everyone to a nervous breakdown
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually... It's 30 hrs a week. But the thing is, people with my level of education work 20hrs a week for twice my salary. My position is supposed to be 30hrs a YEAR for that amount, not 30 hours a week. It's the taking advantage part that I hate. I'd be just fine with it if the state said that it was 30hrs a week for the same amount, but it's the school headmasters that use you any way they want beyond anything that's written in the contract.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, if it says different in the contract, you don't have to do it. And technically they can't fire you for it (that doesn't mean they won't though). Seriously, look into your contract and try to just talk with whoever gave you the contract. It might not help, but maybe (just maybe) he/she sees your point and something will change.
Comment has been collapsed.
There's loopholes and abuses rampant in the states (for example, the unemployed can be worked at far, far below minimum wage- we're talking $2 per hour). I don't know if Croatia is better or worse, but there's no reason to off-hand assume the same abuses don't take place.

Do you like working with children? Because it might be a really bad and stressful choice :D
BUT you won't be working 20 hours - you will be working more: prepairing and checking homework, prepairing and marking tests etc.

I either play drums or play with my dog. Occasionally I'll look for things around the house that need fixing and work on those. For some reason, fixing things relaxes me.
Drums and puppies work most of the time (or make me forget about my problems, at least).

Ok, I know this is gonna make me sound spoiled as hell since I'm bitching about the terrible pay and all but, trust me, you don't know the whole story... I got a car yesterday from my father. Well.. In theory. He still drives it but I'll get it once he gets his new one. I'll be sure to give your advice a go, I just love singing when I'm driving somewhere :D
Comment has been collapsed.
When I'm feeling down, I either stress-eat or stress-shop. Neither of those are really good for me, though.
I also sit outside with my dogs, put on some music, and stare at the sky. Strangely zen.
And I don't really know how the employment market is where you are, but around here I just threw applications at everyone I could until I got a job. Whether they were hiring or not. Even if they said "we're not hiring," I'd give them my application anyway. In fact, the job I ended up getting HADN'T been hiring when I turned in my application. Even if you get some crap part-time job, it'd help you be able to pay the bills through your job internship thing.
This advice probably doesn't help you at all, if so I'm sorry its just that I'm awful with advice-giving, but whatever happens, at the end of the day I hope you have a neat experience at your job internship thing and that your financial situation falls into place and that you cheer up very soon. ^^
Comment has been collapsed.
I know, right?! The problem is, I'm trying to lose wieght so I can't stress-eat. Oh what I wouldn't give to just stick my head down a chips bag... xD
As for stress-shopping... I'm lucky to have been able to save some money up so I could do it but I refuse to spend money on clothes until I get back to my regular weight. Buying new clohes now would be like admitting I'm stuck at this weight xD
When you're doing the internship you aren't allowed to have a second job. Stupid, I know...
Thank oyu for your veryy kind words, imagining I'll meet nice people like you out there in the RL is what keeps me positive :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Whoa, really? Cuz I did an internship for my dental assisting class, and I was allowed to have my other job. Then again, I had the other job BEFORE the internship...and it was unpaid....but still, wow. I did not know that.
And I've been trying to lose weight too, its amazing though how one can be going along well and then one little thing goes wrong and suddenly EAT ALL THE DESSERTS.
And thank you for the thank you. ^^

Well, to be perfectly honest, you didn't choose a major that pays well. It's worth to think that through before starting attending the university, sadly not many people take this into account when choosing their majors :P That said, if you're really desperate in your pursuit of becoming a teacher, you will probably have to spend at least a few years slaving for a trash wage. It's still better than e.g. studying to be a doctor, when you actually have to spend another 5-10 years after graduating having internships, doing an additional learning and getting paid close to nothing.
Anyway, I think you probably already know what to do when you're down, it's usually rather instinctive behaviour. When I'm feeling bad, I most often just stay at home as much as I can, play games, watch movies, drink wine/beer and sleep as much as I can. However, for example my fiancee prefers to spend the whole day outside just seeing interesting buildings (she's an architect) or nature, as it always lifts her spirits. Maybe for you it's looking for a discussion on SG forum ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I knew about the situation in my field when I chose my majors. The thing is, you always see yourself as being special and things not ending up badly for you.... Heh, at least I do. I still believe everything will work out great in the end but it's just the now that's bugging me.
Ah you see... It's the SG forum that I turn to when I'm feeling down, you're right. What can I do, I just love this community and how supportive it is and I get reminded of all the wonderful people that are here to help eachother out. Not a bad instinc I guess :D

So, I'm currently feeling a bit down.
After a year of being unemployed (graduated from university with degrees in English lang. and lit. and pedagogy) I'm about to start a new "job" that'll be very badly paid. It's not really a job. In Croatia we call it "professional training without employment". In theory it's great- you get to go to a school and watch your mentor do his classes for 30 hours and then do 10 hours of your own. And I'm talking 30+10 for the ENTIRE year. Basically, you get paid for 12 months no matter how much you're actually there, as long you make the 30+10 yearly minimum.
Now the problem is... That's only in theory, in practice no one gives a F*** about those 30+10 hours. You get to go there every day, all day and still get paid the miserly 300€.
I know, people are unemployed and would give anything to work for even that much, but wihtout even having finished highschool I used to get 700€+ comission on anything sold. And that was my summer job...
Pease, please don't think of me as being stuck up or that I believe the world or anyone in it owes me anything. I promise I don't. It's just that the 5 years I spent studying to get this seem like a waste. Waitressing pays more. I know because I got more while waitressing (no education needed). Teachers are underappreciated and under-paid. That's life. I didn't go into teaching to get rich, but teachers get cca 600€ for 20hrs a week here, and here I will be slaving as an assistent accountant (they said that to me outright) most of the time and trying to get my 30+10 hours of watching/teaching IF I manage to get permission to leave my accountant spot. My working hours will be from 8-2 and 2-8, as the school works in two shifts.
And I spent a year trying to even get this! What are my chances of ever getting a real teaching job without any connections? Basically 2%, if I'm being optimistic...
I'm seriously considering just saying "f*ck it all" and going into the private sector, where I'll have no job security but at least get to work hours I say I wanna work and actually getting paid for it.
But, no more of me complaining.
When I get like this I usually head to eBay to buy some stuff. It has to be pretty, fuzzy or shiny and serve no real function.
So, when I went there today I found this listing. Isn't it just amazing how it and the Skyrim logo are similar? xD
So telll me, what do you do when you're feeling down?
EDIT: I'm about to go to bed and I just need to say this:
Thank you so much, everyone, for your amazingly kind and supportive words. Even if my problems were much greater than this (taking into account the greater picture) silly thing actually is, seeing that amazing people like you exist out there would have made it all better.
All of you are the reason why I love this community so much.
Thank you, all <3
