Hi guys,

As the title suggests, some friends and I recently started a new Garry's Mod community called 'The Union'. Aside from giveaways where members need to invite friends to get a chance at winning a prize, are there any other good ways to build up a Steam Group?

The group in question is: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/TheUnionServers

Well, posting it here wasn't such a bad idea. If you've got an interesting group, chances are people will join with a little bit of advertising here and there.
Bump.

Yeah true, posting here just got us an additional 20 members (somehow)! We're mostly banking on the giveaways and - more importantly - word of mouth; if we make sure our community is friendly and our server is actually fun, I'm sure people will do the work of advertising it for us.

Don't worry, I can relate. Mass invites - especially when spammed - give me the absolute shits.

Thanks for all the support guys. Posting this here alone has gotten us around 40 members.

Adding a few giveaways to your thread will help a lot, as people will be more inclined to feel obliged to bump your thread and keep it at the top of the forum. Even cheap bundle stuff, doesn't need to be an AAA.

We're mostly aiming to have server related stuff as prizes, but cheap bundle stuff could definitely add further incentive. Thanks.

Make random giveaways, make them group exclusive. Post here and enjoy all the leachers joining your group.

Alternatively you make group recruitment post , explainingwhat your group is about , what your goals with the group is etc and you may gain a couple members .

I'd say I prefer the second option more , as it will gain you group members who want to participate in whatever it is you are doing , rather then couple hundred people who just look for the enter giveaway button and couldn't care less about your nor the 16.437 other groups they are members of .

But I'm not here to judge , just throwing a tough on the matter .

Being a group for Gmod servers, we're mainly aiming to maintain a small but active community. We don't really have the resources to do a bunch of giveaways to get ransoms to join. When I say giveaways, I mean prizes such as in-game money and temporary access to Donator perks.

Well, we ended up doing our first giveaway for the server launch. Got us about 7 members. I was considering buying the script which basically gives players in-game money for joining the Steam group. I realise most people join and then immediately leave, but if even 20% of people stay I think it would be worth it. The script is $7.50 USD. Would this be worth it (the script will pay for itself if two of the people who join donate for the lowest donation store item).
