Well, my first event kind of went sour after just 2 hours so going to make another event this weekend and have somewhat worked out the details. But want to hear ideas for future events. The event needs to be whitelist/group, no other requirements I can think of, not counting level/ratio/whatever requirements :3

Hoping to make it in a way it's fair for "most" users, but there's a long way from hope and reality... Though at least it needs to be fun for those who are interested ☆:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:

Seeing there are no posts at all!
I will suggest make a screenshot contest!

The screenshot must be from a game you own and you have taken it personally before. You can state funny, angry, sad, happy and so on and then add them to a group and make a group giveaway.

Thats the only way the links wont be spread. Every invite only event links are spread!

Well if you want as you are an anime person to provide screenshots on the type of anime you like and that way you can discover more shows to watch and others can also. There are many good shows which I have never heard also but when I watch them I feel its great.

First of all, I think It's hard to make a robust event, so there will be few bumps in the process. There's always going to be pros and cons to anything you end up doing, so just pick something you feel works the best and go with it.

I like the screenshot idea, but not everyone takes screenshots when they game so this may exclude some people. I think screenshot contests have a bit of bias too - the AAA games tend to look nicer so it can be hard for people that have lower-end gaming systems to "win". Instead of picking the best, maybe you should invite everyone that had a screenshot you like.

I remember Salenauts did something like that on their launch. They hid five letters to a Grand Theft Auto 5 across their site. That was actually pretty fun, though, as you mentioned, people will leak the link. Your method will work, but it sounds like a ton of effort on your part.

I don't watch anime, so I can't really weigh in here.

Someone posted an idea about giving people an anime/episode to watch and take a screenshot of the most "insert a genre/category here" part they saw in it. Giving people maybe a day or 2 to do it so even busy people could get a chance at it.
And with the screenshot, it doesn't have to be from a game which requires high-end systems to play. And if I do mention a specific game the screenshot has to be from, then even more people would drop out if they don't have the game xD

Yeah. Like I have screenshots just from KOTOR 1 & 2 and now few from Dead Island: Riptide. So I'd be throw out from any kind of "screenshot from a specific game" or "screenshot with nice background" contest.

But screenshot from certain anime series? I'm in :D Like you can always find out new anime (I found by suprise Kill la Kill series when browsing through screenshots and found set with Mako and cheese xD) or if you don't like anime you can just browse through it and pick up random screenshot.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that seems like an idea. Giving people something to watch makes it a pretty even playing field for the most part. Though if it's a screenshot from a single episode, wouldn't there be a lot of repeated screenshots? There can only be so many funny moments in a given episode, right? :P I could be wrong.

Mentioning a specific game would make it pretty restricted. Some people might not own the game, some people might not have time to play it, or some people might not even want to play the game. So yeah, you have the right idea in avoiding it. :)

For the time based events, it's a bit unfair for people living in different time zones. It would mean some would have to set an alarm and get up at 3 in the morning to be able to join the link hunt... if you don't stay up over a longer period of time yourself, spreading out the link drops.

Also might be quite much work?

The nice thing with an event where people gain whitelist spots instead of direct access to a giveaway is that you can have some kind of screening process. You decide yourself who to add to the whitelist, so there are fewer opportunities to cheat.

The anime related part can be a good idea for the visual novel games I think you had in your last event (I didn't have enough time to check everything since the event was shutting down due to the leak about the time I logged in and saw that the event had started), since I guess that they go well together (people who like anime often like the VN:s?). Not everyone has a large anime knowledge though, so many people wouldn't be able to enter, which can be worth considering (in case you were planning on making the whole event based on anime knowledge).

Right now I only had some notes on the ideas in the original post, but I will try to think of some other ideas and come back later.

I'm actually very curious what you'll come up with. I loved the hunt (clicking through all your screenshots/artwork for links was a lot work but of course very rewarding :D), however it's unfortunate it was spoiled by those people who leaked the invite only links...

If you're going to need a 'site' to hide stuff, I'd recommend adding people for the event to a group instead of whitelist, since you'll be able to edit the steampage of this group with information/hidden ga's etc. This of course depends on how much you want to use Steamgifts in the first place ;D

Good luck with the event, I'll certainly be joining once again!

you can do as other users and create the group based on your current whitelist you know, the one you updated for the treasure hunt and which I hope I'm a part of :P

You can then update the group based on each the profile of each user that request addition to your group... it can be a lot of work, though... so not sure about it :) The good thing is that the group can go further by allowing every1 to create ga's... you know, not a requirement but something we like to do :P

Your last event was a really great idea, I'm really sad it didn't work. I wish you luck this time :)
I like the idea of anime theme screenshots, as I watch a lot, but it's probably not a majority here and a lot of great users who probably deserve to be part of event would be losing at the beginning.

Just after your event failed I was thinking what could you do to make it work next time, one of idea was to make group for people who really checked your whole profile and found a lot of links. You could post a lot of spam there or whatever comes to your mind and do another treasure hunt just within links hidden in a different way in anything you would post. (hidden links, pics with hidden giveaway code, maybe even something hidden in youtube movie - I saw it once, or whatever crosses to your mind - just all hidden in group theards). But to make such group work and spam there a lot... it probably would take some time.

Link hunt might end up being a problem due to timezones and such, as mentioned by tso184... But do want ideas to maybe make it happen, in a way it's fair for most people~
And I like the anime screenshot idea as well, as that can have some funny moments in it xD
But I think the majority of SG users doesn't watch that much anime, if they even watch any...

I don't really mean group giveaways here.
Steam group would be just a place to hide it, while for link hunt you can use only "invite only" gibs.
It probably can't prevent leaks because of random people, but you could always reroll if someone would be not in the group :p

Some people who found the links I had hidden (they weren't even that well hidden), decided to share those links to others so they didn't have to search either. Meaning the whole event was kind of pointless if the hidden links were available other places as well.
So hoping to make an event without invite only give aways, to prevent leaks and such.

  1. It's your event. You can go subjective with nepotism and all. Cons: People will hate you and you will die without a human companion (If you think multipe cats will be enough, go with this)

  2. People will vote with +1 etc. or in a poll. Cons: It may turn into a popularity contest. Crowdpleasers may get the top spots while quality ones got buried down

  3. A combination of both. Cons: Combination of both cons

  4. Another idea that I can't think of at the moment. Cons: Since I couldn't think of it out of the blue, it's probably a terrible idea

You could do a "guess the game" show.

  • Screenshots (created by you and altered in some way so that it's harder to guess
  • Describing a game in a few words (example: "You play as a space cyborg with a knack for blue tentacled aliens")
  • Maybe hangman style for gaming quotes (example: W??. W?? ????r ??a???s - War. War never changes)
  • Hell, go wild. Can't wait to see what you decide to do! ^.^

Best of luck

Quite some time ago, on sappyMA's line of thought, I remember a contest of sorts where a link was provided to "create a superhero", the most original & funny entries were added to that persons' whitelist. I can't find the thread now, not entirely sure what to look for; but yeah, was back close to when I first joined SG.
Or there was another one more recently, where someone did something similar, but wanting game ideas to create a game in RPG Maker. Just a couple of paragraphs to outline the basic story -- Creative writing.

The problem with anything even remotely "artsy" is judging potentially hundreds of entries, and/ or risk creating the event too "restrictive" from those who would struggle to draw even stick figures. Worse when everyone has different opinions over what constitutes as art.
You could gather some people who help with the judging, but then you'd still have to work out a consensus over who gets the final say, encase everyone chooses different 'finalists'.

I mentioned in a reply to one of the older giveaways, to create a private group made specifically for hosting your own series of events.
Theoretically, it could still be a 'treasure hunt' with the giveaways all restricted to requiring to be in the group to enter, thus eliminating link leakage concerns, as they wouldn't be able to enter. But then that comes down to how to establish who should get into that group.

Just an "anyone may enter" system where people post some random screenshot, joke, or haiku upto a certain date/time, then you send group invitations to them? Or still make some kind of competition of sorts out of it, using an event and the event winners get entered into those event choices.

Perhaps 'theme' the giveaways across multiple groups, and users have to write up a "Why I want to enter the... horror category"

So many options, but there would always be concern for regard to puzzles that the answers, or links, would be leaked due to certain people who like to spoil it for others. No idea how true it is, but I remember reading a comment on the other thread where the person who leaked the links was then complaining in his thread later that the giveaways were being deleted.

Also. posting screenshots of the sadest/ ... moment in your favourite show
Clannad ~After Story~, two moments no less. Nuff said.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, but they don't have to be well drawn in any way... As long as what they tell what they're doing (like the idea where you draw yourself doing something). But with entries that needs to be looked through, then yes, it will be a lot of work xD

But that theme train idea is good, maybe adding a "Why do you wish to join insert category here, answer by making/finding a picture which explains why, text on picture is optional" kind of thing... That would eliminate the artsy problem, but also make A LOT of entries since it's somewhat easy... And people who don't get the thought across would start complaining about why, which would be a bother as well...
But yeah, so many ideas to choose from :D

Ok: Here are some ideas:

Since you want to limit the number of people who get in to the event, think about who you want the entrants to be. Some variations I've seen recently in different events:
-Users who have knowledge about a certain thing (anime/other?) - you can always make a puzzle for it. Puzzle links can be leaked though, so you might want to combine it with some other requirement and hand out whitelist spots to those who solve+meet the requirements.
-Users who have contributed much to the Steamgifts Community? You can always say that the entrants must have a certain won:sent ratio, check the people who want to enter and whitelist only those who meet the requirements.
-Users who have played a certain game? You can check if they have gametime/achievements in that certain game before the event started, and only whitelist those who actually have played it.
-Users who have a game wishlisted before the event started? Also easy to check. Whitelist only those who have.

Any combination of the above could work, or any other way you think would be a good idea to limit who has access to the event.

In the original event, you did the hidden links as a few short "trains", right? Each found hidden link took you to a chain of maybe 5-10 givaways.

One way of sticking to that and making things interesting is by dividing the event in several smaller events. You could divide your giveaways on a few different "trains", with the AAA games spread between them. The train which contains Fallout 4 maybe doesn't contain any other AAA game, and a second "train" maybe has 2-3 older/cheaper games, and all have a few bundle games. Maybe divided after theme too?

Then you do whitelist giveaways for one of the "trains" (won't be a train if all are whitelists giveaways, but you get the idea) at the time, maybe one each week, one each day, or what you think would be best (as long as everyone invited has time to enter). For each set of giveaways you could have a different set of requirements.

Example:
Set 1: Mixed bundle games. Requirement: Have at least one of the games on your wishlist
Set 2: VN + anime games. Solve anime puzzle and have given away at least 50% of the number of games you have won.
Set 3: Racing games. Have at least 10 hours of gameplay in any other racing game in your library and have given away at least 50% of the number of games you have won.
Set 4: Ori, Vanishing of Ethan Carter + mixed bundle games. Have at least one of the games on your wishlist, and have given away at least 50% of the number of games you have won.

And so on. Just examples.

Or, you can have the same requirements for all the sets, say what games will be included in which one, and only let users who enter the event choose one (or two?) trains to enter, and whitelist only those who have applied for that particular giveaway set.

Or, just have one, big event with the same entry requirements, but still have the whitelist filtering, so only those who meet the requirements you set up get access to the giveaways.

So, if you're thinking about doing it some way like that, you should think about what kind of user you want being able to enter the giveaways.

Great idea about trains with themes and wishlist requirement, but that just leaves me with tons of wishlists that I need to look through... And with win/set ratio too D:
But there needs to be some requirements at the very least, as I'd prefer people who've contributed a lot to be the main group to join ;D
And multiple events is good too, but also needs to find the time for it~
Thanks for the ideas <3
