Flash sales were nice, but they also sucked. Too many people just couldn't get the stuff they wanted because sleep/work/whatnot.
Burt I agree that adding something new and exciting would be a good idea. Last time I had actual fun during a sale was breaking Monster Summer Game.

I was one of the many people that participated using the script (although I joined in within the last two days), and let me tell you; a few hundred people in an IRC channel deciding when to join, what room number, and the like was something amazing. It was so lovely and organized, and everyone there was so extremely kind. If something like that happened again this year, I'd be ecstatic.

Yes, exactly! By making the minigame 'exploitable' like that, Valve made for an entire community to form over those two weeks and we lived with that game! I remember having it on when I went to present my last programming assignment because I didn't want to leave people alone. And the identity people tied to the groups based on numbers... jsut wow.
#2 for life! :D

I wound up sleeping a couple hours that night. From about 3, 4 am until about 7 because I wanted to be there as much as possible. The little inside jokes that wound up forming in such a short span of time, the optimistic feel as everyone was determined to get it done.. Oh man. I remember we did an 18-mil-jump on the last day.
R2 was also mine on the last day. 49659, and I'm still in those groups that were formed. Heck, I still have the comments on my profile from when people were posting their own profile links and we rushed 'em all. Quite fun.

It was suggested in the past that Valve themselves leaked the dates to build up hype [since suddenly dumping it on people without any warning would detract from encouraging sales].
Of course, by this point, there's so many developers/publishers who theoretically have a reasonable idea of the sale date, that it's irrational to assume the date could be kept a secret.
But as far as the 'annually' bit, the start of the sale actually has had a one-month breadth between June 11th and July 13th in the past, so there is a reasonable amount of uncertainty toward the precise launch date each year.
I mean, until the inevitable 'leak'. :P

We have some time to prepare, thanks for the heads up! ^^

My birthday is June 22nd, so if that is the start date of the sale it will be perfect! I will be getting some Steam Wallets for my birthday, and that will mean copious amounts of spending!:)

It really is!:) And it's not like a person that has their birthday just before or after Christmas (or ON Christmas) and they get their gifts split between the two celebrations (if they celebrate Christmas, that is).;)

You know? You've been a pretty friendly person from what I've noticed. I'm going to add you to my Whitelist.:)

You're welcome.:)
I am hopeful as well. I want NEO Scanvenger (for one) to go on MEGA sale.;)
If it's on sale during the Summer Sale, I would recommend you pick up Submerged. It is a beautiful game, and I had a lot of fun playing it. I have about 40 screenshots of it posted on my Profile, that is how much I enjoyed it. It also has Achievements and cards if you are interested in either of those things.:)

This site predicted the date pretty well http://whenisthenextsteamsale.com.
Im quite surprised really.

I was talking about the special cards, like the summer or winter cards you get from completing badges, I always have a fear that steam will stop them, but you are right I have to suspect steam makes quite a bit of cash from those cards. Even at a few pennies per transaction it adds up super quick i'd imagine.. You have like 15 - 30k of them selling each day, times 8 - 10 of them. taking into consideration it's almost all profit as the items are digital....

9:45 seems like an unusual start time. Don't they usually do just about everything at 10?
I still believe it though.

Thanks for that, and yes, that reasoning would make sense.

Too late, I have prepared for early June

exactly the same date everyone was expecting for months..

They do it every year to keep the hype up... it works only 1-2 days before the sale and it usually ends up being quite disappointing because of people expecting too much out of steam sales... so yeah, steam sales won't be anything special..... no price glitches probably (since flash sales are OUT FOR GOOD) and no hype factor when the sale hits and steam servers go back up... you'll just rush to buy the games you want and that's it. Nothing to make you keep on checking steam store every day....

According to this article I just stumbled upon, a developer has leaked the Steam Summer Sale dates, and they are June 23rd through July 4th. Thought some of you might want to know. :)
