You have to considere quantum mechanics, following Schrödinger et al.
Please follow me for a few steps of this gedankenexperiment.
Is a thread that is not observed alive or dead?
That is a tricky question. We all will agree that a thread with regular (let's say at least every few days) posts is alive and a thread with years without a new post is dead. But when does a thread crosses over?
There is an uncertain time frame (compare Heisenberg et al) during which a thread's status is a superposition of |1> and |2>, with |1> being alive and |2> being dead. As long as we do not observe the thread, both states are possible and only the act of observing will determine the thread's state.
Now we have to investigate what is an "observation"? Does a human has to read the thread or is it sufficient that a bot (e.g. a search engine indexing) "reads" the thread? As it is my cake day, that is your task ;)

The paradox is if one was to view a thread in an effort to determine if it is a dead thread then that act of viewing it in effect has revived the thread as a response is not required for it to become live but mere attention given to it gives life.
So is any thread really dead? Maybe they are all just on pause.

Thanks. There might be clues in a few days. I will update the thread's title in that case.

Dear SG folks,
once upon a time this was a Cake Day thread but no more. Now it is just a puzzle thread.
I have been here for 3 years now :)There is a little treasure hidden, I hope the following map will help you to find it.
