Use the search feature on the Steamgifts forum to find recruitment threads, if any are still open. Usually, you'll only be accepted by being there when they recruit on the forum.

You can always start with a larger private group, like Baker's and work on your CV. If you'd rather do private giveaways, so you're giving to a smaller group, you could always do private giveaways and post them in the forums.
Regardless of how you give them away, your CV goes up the same either way.
