so i have a problem because i'm stupid. i got a new phone yesterday and wanted to change my steam mobile app to the new one. first i changed my contact email adress in steam, because i lost the password for this email adress. i thought i might would be helpfull, if i would have a functional email adress for changing the mobile app.
so i installed the steam app on my new phone, didn't think about anything and reset my old phone. Today i wanted to trade some summer cards, but the confirmation doesn't arrive at my mobile.
now i know, that i should have cancelled the steam guard at the old phone first, before resetting it. the problem is, that i need a recover code, which was send to my old email adress for which i lost the password or i can generate one myself but therefor i need the steam mobile authenticator which i can't get too, because old phone reset.
i thought i ask here first before i write to the support and wait for a month for an answer. maybe somebody got an idea what to do?

fixed: sms with recovery code via steam support page and password

There is none. Beg to support that you lost your recovery key, and MAYBE they might help you.

You had to write code on paper and put somewhere (like wallet or favorite book).

Yesterday I had the same problem ^^ I forgot where's my recover code and made a ticket to support. Fortunately I decided to look in my old txt files - and yes, i found it :)
Now i have 7-days trade block - its bad, but its better then 1 month waiting from support

I had to reset my phone to factory defaults, I restored the app from the backup, but it thought that was a new phone. So, I also ended up with an unfair trade block, during the summer sales :|

I am glad I came across this thread. Just wrote down my own recovery code.

you could use KeePass from now on to keep track of passwords.. if you have a problem remembering them...

+1
and KeePassX if you need it cross-compatible with Linux, but you sacrifice a small handful of the features.

So, is there any way that can avoid 7 days hold ban when switching from current to another phone?

Same thing happened to me. This mobile authenticator is a pos. I only activated it so I can sell my cards, I'm deleting it afterwards, and back to old mail auth.

i think i might found a way, but i'm not sure. i deactivated all authorized devices and i think if i act like i lost my account it should work, because i got access to my email which is linked to steam and like said i deauthorized all devices. but im scared, even if i dont have to :D

Don't use a throwaway/forgotten email for a site where you have money involved. Ever.
Use a password manager if you cannot remember not only a password, but a login name either.

Contact support and pray they are not fed up with everything, so they may take a pity on you and reset your mobile authenticator. You'll get a 7-day trade lock though.

don't you think i could just retrieve my account? then mobile authenticator should be reseted shouldn't it? and yeah, i'll tattoo the new recover code in future ^^

Retrieve Steam account? That hits you with a much severe penalty on the market than changing authenticator.

yes. but then, at least i think so, the mobile authenticator changing should be no problem anymore because reseted. or am i terrible wrong?

You are right, I just offered you a simpler solution. After they unlink the authenticator, you can change email to anything and get a new authenticator linked, as if you just used the authenticator for the first time. A lot less messier than going through the account retrieval process, which is, by the way, a one-time thing: if you actually get hacked later somehow, that will be it.

isn't anymore like "i got access to my email adress", "i know the name of my account" thing? i thought i could simply the email for recovering the account...

It is, assuming it sends the retrieval code to the new email address. Don't forget: Steam Support page has a different, separate registration from Steam with its own separate user data, and if you have the old email registered there, then it will send the code there.

i had a similar issue when i switch phone carriers i did disable the mobile guard from my old phone first tho but what i had forgotten to do was remove the old phone number from my steam account and the only way to do that is with a text message to the old phone...that i no longer had, personally i think the current set up steam is using for phones is stupid and a bit ridiculous but that said,,you can do what i did put in a steam ticket and ask for them to remove you old number so that you can set up mobile guard on your new phone they will likely ask you for some private info to prove you are the owner of the account like last few games you have bought and what the credit card number was that you used for it as well as some other things the more info you give the faster the process will be it took me about a week and a half.

i'm glad i still got my number and only lost the device. i dont use any form of paying which is trackable to my person, no paypal or credit card only paysafecards so i couldn't prove that it is my account.

It does what it's supposed to do very well in my experience. That is prevent users from accessing their own accounts or items.

Yeah, it's good at that... all my items withering away, boosters untouched, a system ruined :/
