I just read news about another security update from Valve and now i feel more pissed off than before.

  1. Trade hold duration will be increased to 15 days (for long-time Steam friends the duration will remain 1 day)
  2. Listing on the Steam Community Market will have a hold of 15 days before an item can be sold
  3. Steam Support will no longer restore items that have left accounts following a successful trade or market transaction (a process that previously created duplicates of original items)

http://store.steampowered.com/news/20631/

What do you think about it? That 2. means, that when i buy item on Steam Market, i will must wait 15days to trade it? Or just wait 15 days to sell it, but trade that after 7 days as it now? Right now, i am pretty furious about this another stupid changes. Btw 997 trades on steam and 10321 transaction on Market and never got scammed. Just let me know your opinion.

When you buy an item, you'll still have the seven-day trade/sell lock on it. When that ends, then if you try to sell it again, after you put it up, it will take 15 days for the item to show up on the market so people can buy it. Goes for dropped cards as well, so if you buy a game and get the cards, it will also take 15 days for them to enter the market. It will especially hurt booster crafters without mobile guard, since those prices fluctuate even more than CS:GO/TF2 items.

You use BlueStacks to emulate an Android device on your computer and run the authenticator in there. Not the simplest solution, but it works.

True. Those are memory hogs xD. But the Authenticator only gives you the code needed for logging in...trade confirmations need the actual app. Unless I missed something (?) when using it...there's no way to confirm trades with it.

thats nonsense.

if i buy a car i want original components, and not to be told, buy from this free retailer the engine u need, but pay full price here.?!
thats two different storys

but if u r fine with that solution ok ur way of let em do it.
and go search for solutions for problems which made from the corp.

I say its not fair, and you should know it, if they bring something onto their platform which is needed to use it smoothly, they should take responsibility and bring it to all of it users withput any probslems.
if you tell me no they dont need to cuz monopol corps dont need to.

than im fine

......... maybe I tok it out too much. IM NOT into this free app u gloriefy.. its for free, but HELLO

STeam brings up something and we users need to get the upcoming problem solved?

than its also ok to be game designers or programmers who sell a full price game , which you know aint functinally and let the community fix the game failures?

there are games out there which are indeed with those critieria...

and than those gamers and the community aint also allowed to say something cuz there are mods which brings the game up to life, ohh hell yea.

Why I`m upset is not the fact that there is a community made free solution ,
(Made by some free programmers without any responsibilitys to guarantees of account security btw or even fully functionallity and updates)

It is that they leave a whole bunch of users out of their sight, leavin them alonewith from the corp.made problem and stand above it.
And you mark this behaviour as "it is ok", " we found a solution" , btw granted such behavior from the corp.

bam they found the green ticket to do so in any other possibilites, and im not fine with that

If you're into 15 days of waiting period more than the app, it's your choice. I wouldn't mind removing all authenticators and limits, and let the cyber-darwinism run its course, but I guess Steam is more into protecting their userbase, than pleasing the very few who (think they) are smart enough to not need additional security measures.
Also, Android and iOS are standard, and I assume whoever bought Windows phone, knew the possible consequences of getting a largely non-supported thing.
It's like you're installing Linux on your PC, and then complain you can't play many of the new games.

I call that BS aswell. I am living in Germany and everywhere you go you see kids at the age of 8+ running around with smartphones and i would say that maybe 1% of them have a windows phone.
Countries where smartphones are the broad standard will also have Android and iOS as standard since they are leading and more or less sharing the market between them.

Same. I don't want to call things BS easily, but my country is similar in the matter of kids running around with smartphones. It also cant be the majority since steam stated that 95% of their users are using the authenticator already.
So even if 90% of steam users would be Americans would still mean that the majority of non Americans have acces to the authenticator since some of the 5% just dont care about it but could use it like me.

The answer is 90% of adults have cell-phones or at least will by 2020. That doesn't necessarily mean smart-phones, and also includes windows phones (which valve doesn't seem to care about).

And before you even attempt of throwing down the "but the people in Africa" bullshit, here is one for our region:
http://www.statista.com/statistics/494572/smartphone-users-in-central-and-eastern-europe/
Smartphone penetration around here is not even 50% and I'm not even counting the fact that company users usually account for two phones per person (like I do, for example… or, to be more precise, I count as three). Heck, MS is bringing back the old Nokia mobile phones for another series because it still sells like crazy on markets like this.

Comment has been collapsed.

Thats right but those people do'nt matter in this discussion. Why? Because they have nothing to do with steam.
You would have to have the numbers of Steam users with a smartdevice and it seems like atleast 95% managed to use an authenticator and there are still people like me who have acces to them but dont use them.
And lets be hones. Everyone with acces to a pc has the possibility to get an authenticator running.

And lets be hones. Everyone with acces to a pc has the possibility to get an authenticator running.

THAT is more like a real hitting the nail on the head. There are two portable programs now that can do it. They are both unofficial, so my point about Valve's standing on things won't be redacted, but thankfully the community was there to help those who Valve didn't give a single shit about, so they do not have to be left out.
And, frankly, being able to just copy-paste the login codes is so much simpler than typing them in all the time, especially that I have a main and a small card-trading account I need to open every time…

I haven't used it yet, but I have a question for those who have: at what point does the mobile app require you to authenticate when, for example, listing a trading card on the market? Is it when listing the card?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So far I only had to open the app and get the code (which regenerates after every 30 seconds) to sign into Steam itself or a Steam affiliated site like Steamgifts or SGTool. Listing trading cards on the market is hasslefree. No authentication needed.
Don't know about trading games or items, haven't traded in a long time.

Trading requires mobile app confirmation after you finish the steps at your PC (at least for me, no idea if you can turn it off or whatnot). Probably same with market now, even though I haven't tried.

So if you want to sell a lot of cards, you probably will have to get a code for every card? If that's the case, that will suck pretty hard...

If it will be anything similar to trading, it only takes some tapping. Trade confirmation = tap on the phone. No code juggling.

I hope so. Do you actually also have to privide your phone number, or is having the app installed and logged in enough?

Phone numbers are for SMS things, more serious stuff, in random daily authentication stuff you'll not need it. But the good thing is, you can have a dumb phone, and use Android emulator on PC, so the SMS and Steam Guard app don't have to be on the same device.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Putting items on the market requires authentication over a certain value (3 USD, but I may remember wrong). Any trade where you lose an item (so you are not just gifted stuff) requires authentication. Also, every time you log in on any platform (browser, client, phone) requires a log-in code. Any time you want to start a purchase in the store requires an additional login with a new code for the first time on that session.

Hmm. I was about to download it for my Android phone and then I read all of the bad reviews on the play store. Sounds like lots of people are having trouble logging into their Steam account at all, especially after changing their phones.

It sounds like Valve needs to do a bit more work on ironing out issues, and making phone changeover go more smoothly.

The android version seems like a bastard child Valve made reluctantly because somebody told them that unlike the belief of most people in California, not everyone in the world, moreso, not everyone in the United States has an iPhone. This is why you'll see most people recommend the two Windows desktop programs instead (WinAuth and Steam Desktop Authenticator). They don't have any problems and both are portable.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Aha. I will try them instead. Do I have to download the android version first to get it set up, or can I go straight to winauth and desktop authenticator?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Both are independent and self-contained. You will need a phone capable of receiving SMS and associated with your Steam account, and also an email verification.
If you use a password manager or some sort of safe note application, I advise getting it ready to store a one-time recovery code too. The authenticator will ask for it once to see you wrote it down, and it'll be your only recovery option if you ever accidentally delete the user profile data (the equivalent of getting your phone lost for these programs).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hey, thank you for the help! :)

I've downloaded WinAuth and been through the process of setting it up. I already had a mobile number on my Steam account, and it picked that up and sent a SMS through. Under Account Security my Steam account now says "Protected by Steam Mobile Authenticator". I just logged out of Steam and back in again and it required my authentication code, which I got from WinAuth. So I assume that means I'm all good to go, right?

I haven't bothered downloading the Steam Desktop Authenticator. Is that required for anything beyond what WinAuth does?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, not any more. When this whole trade lock started, WinAuth was unable to confirm trade transactions, while SDA was made for that. Now both have this feature, so it is only a matter of taste which one you use.
And yes, it means you are good to go. You need to wait 168 hours after the authenticator was activated to not run into the 3-days trade lock (or 15-day on the 9th), but after that, you'll have a fully unlocked account.
Just make sure to have WinAuth ready on a portable storage media if you want to log in on another PC.

I would feel sympathetic to the steam users who have smartphones that do not have the steam app or no smartphone at all, but I am not because the escrow system is more of a personal issue and not a universal problem. Furthermore, to avoid the escrow system by not using steam's market and/or leave steam wholly are the easiest but the most bitter choices to make; however, not impossible. Either conform with steam's guidelines or raise yourself up and use another video game DRM. Valve provides extra security methods and I am thankful for them.
