First pre-alpha gameplay footage for Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 3 is available:

  1. 12 minutes of Gameplay footage with commentary by Eurogamer.

  2. 2.5 minutes of Gameplay footage from the official channel, presented like a trailer, includes slightly different footage, no commentary.

  3. 3.5 minutes of Gameplay footage with commentary in German, includes some shots not included above, like bases (at the 1:29 mark).

Highlights / key takeaways:

  • Gameplay is a mix of DoW 1 and 2, i.e., large armies are back, hero units still play an important role
  • Base building is included again (although to what extent is unclear)
  • Cover system has been scrapped entirely to focus on large battles (according to the third video)
  • New art style, with a somewhat more 'cartoon-like' look, the priority was on clarity and responsiveness
  • New massive hero unit: The Imperial Knight (makes the fearsome Dreadnought look small and cute in comparison).

Much has been made of the new art style here, and Warhammer 40K fans have already bemoaned the allegedly cartoonish look (I dread to think that this will lead to another Diablo III art controversy). I have to disagree with the commentary in the first vid, regarding lack of detail on the units - I don't think we have ever seen so fantastically detailed units in a DoW game, even if they have been shaded in a somewhat brighter fashion. This extends to the combat and death animations, and the blood and gore are fittingly messy and visceral. If anything, I thought the most immediately 'cartoonish' thing about the new art style was the environment. Anyways, I'm very much looking forward to this. They can have ALL MY HYPE. IN THE GRIM FUTURE THERE IS ONLY WAR. WAR. WAR NEVER CHANGES. (Or something.)

But that's just me. What are your thoughts? Re: art or anything else on display here? Yay or Nay?

Your favourite Dawn of War game? (Dark Crusade was unavailable in the list, choose Last Stand Necron Overlord for this option instead.)

I'm pretty sure people click on Youtube vids and postulate and conjecture and proselytise here, though. I mean, I do it myself all the time. :/

I personally dislike the cartoonish graphics, speed, animation and hero size\power. But base building is back. It seems, so far, like quite a bitter pill. I have been waiting since it became clear what DOW2 was - for DOW3, but think I may wait a bit more until this reaches under £7 to pick it up (my own tipping point). Of course there is room for change in this opinion, being so early, but I feel none of the above bodes well in regards to what I was hoping for.

p.s. I voted Dawn Of War 1 Dark Crusade \ The Last Stand Necron Overlord
