Anyone try the new firefox and Steamgifts? I usually have a lot of tabs which slows down Chrome considerably. Anyone try it out yet? With and without extensions?

It is fast as hell but still feels more restrictive than Vivaldi (which is slow, I admit, but I never cared about browser speed that much compared to usability).

What's special about it? What would it do for me that Chrome can't? Legit questions.

I also use Chrome, but not as my main browser. So I don't know if it can do these things with extensions/addons, but here are some of my favorite Vivaldi features (in no particular order) that it can do out of the box without extension:

  • side panel that gives you quick and easy access to bookmarks, downloads, history etc. Just click anywhere on the left edge of the screen to open it. It opens the bookmark list on the bookmark you used last. It is by far the fastest way to access my bookmarks in any browser and one of the most important features for me.
  • the color scheme changes based on the background and design of the web page being visited (took this from the wiki as I did not know how to describe it). This is just a cosmetic feature, but it is nice as it kind of blends the tabs with the web page.
  • mouse gestures (again, no extension needed). Important for me as I mostly use a laptop and do not always have a external mouse.
  • hibernation of tabs. If you are like me and use a lot of tabs this will free resources. There are sites that I only use once in a while but would forget visiting if I had no tab for them.
  • previewing tabs (FF and Chrome don't seem to have this oddly enough, seems so simple). Shows you a preview of the tab’s contents when you hover over the tab. Useful when you have a lot of tabs and it only shows the first three letters of the title (as it does for me).
  • you can use Chrome extensions as it uses the same rendering engine. Not important for me, but maybe for you as you are coming from Chrome.
  • capture page with the click of a button. With a screenshot you can only save what is visible to you in that moment. Capture page let's you save a full page screenshot directly to .png or .jpg. You can also save a selection of a web page by simply drawing a box around it.
  • a few little things you can easily access from the toolbar at the bottom, like:
-- toggle images and animation if you can't be bothered with that one notoriousy flashy site and just want to read or you just want to save bandwidth
-- filter black & white. Turn everything on the web page black&white. Again, easier reading on flashy sites.
-- and a few more filters like Filter Invert (if you prever white text on black background), Fonts Monospace (if you come across a site that uses an obnoxious and almost unreadable font) or Reader View.

There is a lot more of course. If you're interested go over to their help page. A lot of the features are explained with videos which is probably preferable to me describing it so-so.

That took way too long to write for the few people that will actually read it. ;)

I don't think it is slow by any means. Just try it and use it as a second browser maybe. I always use three browsers simultaneously for different stuff and to split up the many tabs 🙄

Do you know if the SG scripts are working on Vivaldi? Basically non-existent now on Firefox.
Will take a little while to migrate all my bookmarks, passwords, etc, which is the main reason I'm sticking to Firefox...it does a great job of syncing across the numerous devices that I review and test and don't need to remember all my passwords, bookmarks and the likes.

"Oh no, Google knows my browsing habits & the webpages I've visited!" Yeah, I couldn't give a two fucks if I'm being spied on. lol
Just about everything you do these days is being monitored one way or another, without your knowledge, whether you like it or not. Your smartphone, apps on your devices, Your OS, Facebook, Your smart TV, your car, emails, toys, Your ISP, your phone carrier, your watches or those stupid fitbit thingies. The list goes on. Every company etcetera etcetera is doing it. Google is not the first, nor will they be the last.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, only because you accept.

  • My smartphone doesn't spy on me because I only use custom OS and always check permissions before I install an app.
  • My Facebook doesn't spy on me because I don't use it.
  • I'm doing everything I can about my ISP and other web sites. I'm using Opera/Firefox with VPN always running together with dns-crypt, uBlock Origin and NoScript.

The difference is you're fine with all of these, I'm not. Until the whole topic of "spying" is better regulated and customers actually gain some rights throughout the world (maybe some more laws by EU? I don't know), I'm taking measures. I'm not saying it's 100% safe, of course not. But it's better than "Meh, Google can track every single step I take, everyone does anyway."

Sure, I was using TabMixPlus, but there were other extensions that did the same.

WebExtension's API that's required by TabMixPlus haven't been finalized, so the developer of that addon can't make WebExtension-compliant addon. The developer said he'll make it happen, but dunno when. Basically, Mozilla broke every single thing that made TabMix worked, so yeah the 'fault' is on them.

As far as I'm aware, there's no suitable replacement (WE-compliant) for that addon.

If you can bear with some annoyances, there's a way.

Download and install Firefox Nightly .

Did it change so much after this last update?

Only WebExtension add-ons are now supported, a huge change.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sorry for the possible dumb question, but what are WebExtension add-ons?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I assume you know what browser add-ons are, so...
WebExtension is an API through which ALL Firefox add-ons must now operate. This removed the possibility to do many things which were previously possible through other methods. Many add-ons were made unusable as a result of this.

If you don't use browser add-ons this has no effect on you. Or if you were lucky enough that all the add-ons you use were re-made to work with WebExtensions (if they didn't already use it).

For one thing, Classic Theme Restorer won't work anymore. The whole big thing about Firefox Quantum is that it uses a whole new addon framework called WebExtensions, and there is currently no WebExtensions API to do most of the things that Classic Theme Restorer does.

On the other hand, the general appearance of the whole browser has been overhauled, so if you happen to like the new look then you might not need Classic Theme Restorer.

Yes, it doesn't work anymore and the change is huge!
I decided to go back to an older version until they make add-ons for the new version that I can use.

AFAIK Classic Theme Restorer will lose/has lost most of its functionality due to the addon restrictions.

Seems faster, but I lost some add-ons which can no longer function in this new version.
Biggest grievance is the grey on grey scrollbar and the addon which allowed to change the colors is one of the ones which can't be made to work anymore.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had no idea there was one to change the scroll bar colour, which one do you use so I can get it when it's fixed for FF57. The grey on grey has been driving me nuts for years, especially on long web pages or when I'm tired.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I used this one https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noiascrollbars/

However it can't be fixed, as far as I know, as the new extension system doesn't allow that kind of changes to made to the browser ui. I searched for a solution yesterday for couple of hours and no solution exists for now. It seems the scrollbar colors come from the operating system so it's also Windows which has crappy colors, and Firefox doesn't allow changes like other browsers do. It is possible to purchase some third party software which allows operating system template changes and might change the scrollbar colors too. Don't want to pay for it so I no idea if it really works.

There were also some references that somekind of userinterface API would possibly be added at some point which might allow doing what the addon did.

God awful would be my answer.

I did a clean install of windows and installed FF together with Chrome.
For some unexplained reason FF starts to hog memory like a black hole with no explanation.
As long as it's open for more than an hour it's going to start draining it until it crashes or becomes unusable so I restart it.
What is worse I don't even have that many tabs open at once (10 tabs is max while 4 to 6 is the usual average for me) and I tried testing it with only homepage (google) is open and as soon as it hits 1h+ mark it starts absorbing memory :(

So I'm not happy at all since now I have 2 browsers which hog memory more than the games I play :(
This might kill my old chap who is sadly already 9 years old </3

hm okay pretty much for that age (i mean the ram)
i can run on one of my older systems 11 to 13 years old hardware - guild wars 2 world vs world (sometimes 150+ player pvp battles)
with 20-40 fps on low to medium setting ...but browsers send this system sometimes to the graveyard ;O

may its a FF only problem - i had something similar with older versions of FF i think it was 51 and 52.0 it crashed always after 1-2 hours with just 4-6 Tabs.... just a handful people had that problem i googled a lot to fix
the problem disappeared then 2 versions later

Maybe you should try a older version of FF or switch to another browser there are many more as just FF and Chrome
try Opera, Vivaldi, Avantbrowser to name just a few

It's pretty darned fast, but like others said greasemonkey doesn't seem to work, had to switch to tampermonkey and redownload a lot of scripts , old themes went out the window for the time being and my pretty scrollbar overlay to replace this atrocious giant white scrollbar doesn't work for the time being either. sighs
For what it's worth streams and the bttv extension work fine on the quantum, the old firefox kept rubberbanding when watching streams so bad on me lately it was becoming unbearable. SteamGifts with the ESGST extension is much faster than it used to be too.

Not interested in losing 70% of my add-ons. Not sure what I'll do when security updates because needed...
That new version sucks, but was brought upon us by all the computer illiterate who want nothing but "speed" from a browser. I remember of a time when the pitch was "Try Firefox, it has tons of great extensions". Good old times...

Firefox 52 EST will continue to get security updates until well into next year, so you can move onto that. By then the Firefox devs will hopefully have implemented enough WebExtensions APIs for your favourite addons to be updated or replaced.

The problem is my affected extensions are, as far as I know, unique to Fx because precisely they can't be made via the WebExtension system. Things like RefControl, Small Tabs, Tamper Data...
But maybe some solutions will come up later, so I might just use Fx ESR, as BarefootMonkey suggests, to wait until add-on developers catch up a bit. Interesting thing though :)
