Of course I do it. I need extra help with the advertising and I don't think paying $10 an hour for someone to copy and paste a description is a good idea. It's not even a full time job, I told the woman she could do it whenever she has fre time.

have you considered the fact the minimum wage at Bangladesh is $0.09 per hour?

I would if I had $100. But if I'm paying you that much, would you do it nonstop for the day? I told the woman she could do it whenever she wanted because my price was very low. I also gave her the freedom to use programs to automate if she had one.

The OP is probably one of most terrible people I have heard about. 0.3$ per hour and then he is afraid of being swindled 7$ or something. If she logged the time she logged the time. You pay her super low wage she works supper slow sounds fair(not really) to me.

sounds to me she had known what she signed up for. If you agree to be paid $0.01 for 1 hour then you only get $0.01.

OP prefers others to do it for her, so she hired someone else to do the task. I could have done my own taxes but I hired someone to do it.

I don't have enough money to do the current minimum wage. If I had $1000 then I would be able to maybe hire someone else for $10/hr but the problem is I DONT. I only have around $40 in my paypal because I don't have a job (full time student and I don't want to lack off to get a part time job). I currently live with my parents and I'm trying to earn some exra money so I can buy most of the things I need.

Just dispute it and see what happens. Next time you should use freelancer dot com, they have a "milestones" feature, you put the money there and write all the requirements, and you only release the money once they deliver the work or show proof right there on the milestone thing, disputes are easier that way. Amazon mechanical turk seems good for slave work too, it used to be super cheap, not sure right now.

I tried freelancer but no one was interested in this kind of advertising for some reason.

You know what I find very amusing ? All the people posting on this topic about how the OP is terrible etc etc. Has anyone bothered to consider the fact 0.3$ per hour and 7$ may seem like very small amount of money but when you convert it into their local currency ( I believe that is Taka ? ) , its quite a respectable amount, especially considering the job it was paid for.
Instead of ranting and hurling abuse at the OP , why don't any of you answer the bloody question he is asking ? Seriously I understand your thinking . No one likes to see such wide disparity in economic conditions between different areas but taking it out on some bloke on the internet isn't going to help them.
On topic though , I have no idea mate . I don't even know what oDesk is . It seems unlikely you'll get your money back. Why did you employ someone without any feedback ?

Hallelujah a smart person on SG! And oh because the people with feedback were asking for a little too much and no one else was willing to do it. I only have a budget of $40 and it would burn out too quickly if I paid someone around $10 an hour.

Get your logic out of here! You're getting in the way of uninformed forum rage!

You failed to give your labor the illusion of freedom while secretly forcing a work onto them. Oh, and despite what you say, it costs $15 monthly for 10-15 kbps internet. 64 kbps is $65. The cost of a pretty terrible residence is $80. $7 is not that much. (Based on averages, maybe her living conditions are worse).
With that said, I was being perfectly honest in my first statement. There's a reason Chinese managers don't tell their workers, "Do whatever you want". Either deny human rights or pay more, your choice.
And it isn't worth it to make a huge fuss over $7. You'd probably waste a lot of time. But if you absolutely want to, try this

Are you saying $65 in Bangladesh or what? And where did you find these chinese managers that say that XD? I have stated so many times that I only have $40 in Paypal right now. How did I deny human rights when the woman knew what she had to do and knew the price range? She could have completely denied the offer by ignoring it and I wasn't theone who offered $0.30/hr, she did.
I think I'll just advertise by myself for now, but thanks for sharing the link with me.

People can still be lazy even knowing what they have to do. You never denied human rights, but if you expect to hire VERY cheap labor, expect to if you want any progress. Chinese managers do the exact opposite of the quote. I pulled the figures from a number of resources and just converted them if they were in taka.

It's actually 3 times their minimum wage (as samstone stated) but alright :3. I don't know, the lady was just talking too nicely for me to limit a few things for her at first.

She told me her internet is 50kb/s. That means she isn't struggling financially in her country, right?

"oDesk gets 10% of the money she earns and I'm afraid that they will side with her."
What a lack of trust in others...

I read a few reports on disputes and most of they have been denied and they were suspecting that it's because oDesk earns 10%. If you don't have anything useful to say then don't comment, I've seen too many useless comments today that didn't help with the problem.

I haven't ever used oDesk, but on elance, the money goes in to escrow, and if you agree the work has been done to a high standard, you "release" the money. If not, and the worker disagrees, it gets sent back to elance to look over. I think you can trust elance and odesk to be fair because if they keep siding on the worker in order to get a 70c cut, then they're cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Your biggest issue here is that you left reasonably high feedback? without checking the work?
If so, they'll likely side against you due to that fact alone.
I'm not going to moan about how much you paid them, because I am a freelancer that uses elance and also a business owner that, like you, use hired help to advertise for me. As a freelancer, it's up to me to choose a good work rate. If I rate too low, which I have done far too fucking many times, that's my fault, not my client's. In my opinion, you should file the complaint, but overall expect nothing.
Hiring people is a learning curve and to be honest, $7 is not a big loss overall - I once got ripped off for $300 of work on a different website and that's why I use elance now over anyone else, they seem fair.
elance and odesk are merging too, so if you're lucky enough to get the elance support, give it a go. But as I said, expect it to be a loss, put it against your taxes and forget about it. I know that's easier said than done, but it's the best option for your own piece of mind.

This website is steamgifts.com. On the forums almost everything can be discussed. I think you are asking the community questions that can only be solved by asking 'oDesk'. Do you expect people to tell you about how they changed the star level ? Do you think anyone from the steamgifts community changed the amount of stars and is willing to share their experience ?
The replies are farther from a response to your question and are all pointing towards your business ethics.

So I hired a freelancer a few days ago. I have no experience in using sites like these. I need someone to do simple copy and pasting advertisements and I was going to pay hourly. I hired this woman from Bangladesh and pay around $0.30/hr. When I went on today I found the work diary and thought that it was pretty convenient to have this feature.
Now here's the part that I'm upset about. The woman in fact logged hours of doing absolutely nothing and now I have to pay her $7. The support said that I can file a dispute and "maybe" get my money back tomorrow, but I'm worried that I won't because in the contract, oDesk gets 10% of the money she earns and I'm afraid that they will side with her.
The woman did not have any feedback on her but her resume looked really great and I thought that this was such a simple job that anyone could just do it. She also used some kind of automated thing. The problem isn't the $7, it's that she doesn't DESERVE the $7. If anyone knows anything about oDesk, i would really like some help please.
Also, I gave her a little too much for the feedback (as I am a nice person). Is there a way to edit it and make it one star?
