Yes but the entertainment was mainly gladiator fights to the death and criminal combats... and wild animals releasing ... they were also used for festivals too but the main source of entertainment was graphic gory and violent deaths ....
It seems alot of our modern entertainment follows the same practice today.

Pula is a wonderful city and thank you for making it a Steamgifts landmark :D
Btw, the gladiatorial fights were rarely to death, as getting good fighters was not an easy task, they were pricey. Of course, it still was a horrible entertainment but I thought this little detail was worth a mention :)

I went on a little train tour of Europe years ago. When I got to Croatia, I met a lovely young lady in Zagreb and ended up just staying there with herrather than following my plan of going to Split and Dubrovnik. Bit of a shame I didn't make it to other parts of the country, but I still had a good time!
The main things I remember are going to Plitvice Lakes, drinking, eating lots of a pastry type snack from shops that you could get with cheese or meat in (only thing I could find that might be it is Štrukli but I don't remember the name) and trying to learn some of the language and being amazed at how difficult the grammar was. Also, the first day I arrived there was a football match going on between Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. It wasn't the best first impression! lots of riot police and pretty scary looking supporters.
Anyway, thanks for the puzzle. I'll try it now.

Yep.. Štrukli, our national meal (at least here in southwest of the country) :)
But it isn't with meat, it's with cheese or apple ... with meat is called burek!

Landmark 5 is the Pula Arena found in Croatia. I was totally engrossed in the history behind this landmark which is merely one Roman amphitheater from over 200 that were built!
The horrors of what went on in these amphitheaters was appalling... thankfully the violent gladiatorial fights and wild animal attacks on criminals and Christians was later stopped.
Begin your tour HERE
Note: Collect the passcodes from the 5 landmarks from this week to gain access to a train for week 1!
Schedule for complete event and access to weekly trains can be found HERE
