How much is a TF2 key in nowadays? I'm not into this, but was wondering, because I always see on steamtrades people that want keys, keys, keys.

But what I really want to know is why TF2 keys have suddenly gone up in price on the market ($2.40) AND Dota 2 keys have gone down to $2.10. It used to be the other way around for so long. Is there a shortage or increase in supply of either of them?

6 refined metal or $1.75-$1.85. A bit more if you buy them from the market.

I'm assuming with all that cash shit going on there that tf2 items aren't actually cosmetic only?
(just checking!)

TF2 Keys are used as a currency since it's not possible to trade Steam Wallet for items via trades.

It really has nothing to do with the game :)

but if nobody uses keys why are they still so "expensive"?

Why is a piece of paper that says $20 worth $20? Because the economy decided it does :)

TF2 Keys have a value in the community because people decided they were a form of currency. Some people do use them to uncrate TF2 items but most trade them.
