Should I just suck it up and figure out how to build one?
I felt the same way before building my first rig 15+ years ago. It was pretty easy then (once you educate yourself a little), and it's even easier now. :)
Here's just one possible source (I've never used it but I know many others who do) : https://pcpartpicker.com/

Either learn about building and build one, or you can find one online after you've done your research.

Even though it's a pain in the butt, putting together your own computer is the best way to go. You can choose exactly what goes in, its cheaper than going pre-built, and you get the reward of accomplishment when you get it up and running.

I'm not a computer geek, so I had to read reviews, forums, etc, a lot of research to choose the parts I wanted (I learned a lot, but forgot most of it 3 years later). Then I ordered one online, but I paid an extra $50 or so to have them build it for me. Best of both worlds I guess!

If you can put together a LEGO set you can put together a PC. There's nothing wrong with buying a pre-built Desktop so long as you know what you're buying and you don't mind paying a HUGE premium for the convenience of it all, which can sometimes be three times as much money prebuilt vs. home built.
Sometimes you can get a decent deal by buying a prebuilt at Best Buy or Walmart that's on clearance versus customizing one at a boutique place.

Heck, most of it is plug and play at this point. Do plenty of research before purchasing components, and have google open when actually putting it together. It will help alleviate a lot of those "Am I pushing too hard" or "now where does this wire go" fears very quickly. And give yourself plenty of time. It's going to take time to put together. Not something you want to rush.

With my birthday coming up soon I've been meaning to treat myself with something special :O
I've wanted to get a decent gaming desktop for a looooong while now. My current laptop is... well... it's incredibly crappy I'm not sure how I've managed to make my games run...
The thing about gaming desktops I keep hearing is I have to build my own one...
Does anyone know anything about that?
Another option that not many people suggest is to just somehow find a prebuilt one somewhere. I'm not sure if a regular store would have anything decent for gaming though.
I've seen some online but honestly I wouldn't have any idea if they're the right call... And I'm not really used to buying online either way ;;
TL;DR:
I want a gaming desktop for my birthday. Should I buy or build?
Thanks in advance for any input!! ;< Making threads is scary man.
