So I entered a Saints Row 2 giveaway and I won :D
Thing is, the guy sent me the key via email the same day I won it. I couldn't be any happier. I logged into steam and put the key in and it said it was invalid.
I messaged the guy back saying the key is invalid. He replied saying to try again but instead of l to try 1. I did. Nothing
I messaged the guy saying it still didn't work and that I noticed he was missing the last 2 characters of the key.
He never messaged me back. I went and checked his profile it says he is suspended. He also has other giveaways he still hasn't sent the key to. Yet it says he was only 4 hours ago.
What should I do?

Just wait it out and put I didn't receive the gift? I'm not demanding to get it since after all it is a gift. Just kinda sucks I never got it. :c

I was thinking of that. But won't it get locked or something after certain amount of tries?

Key entry locks after like 5 invalid keys, but only for like an hour or something. But it's probably a fake key anyway so there's no point in even trying.

no, for a period, whenever a user entered several keys in a row Steam would block that person from entering more keys (saying all keys were invalid regardless of the key). This has been changed though and Steam doesn't lock key activation.

No. The ability to redeem games on your account gets "locked" for a short time (possibly 1hr?), not the key itself.

I dont think this happens anymore. Someone posted a key on a forum I use missing the last letter. It was a Z, and I started at A and went the whole way through the alphabet without Steam giving me any notifications until the game activated.

My guess is that you aren't getting the game and just mark not received after 7 days.

It's hard because this is my second game ever won. I do not have experience with this or what happens if the user gets suspended. Just wanted information thats it.

He's just asking a question, no need to treat him like an idiot.

Sorry to hear that. As others have said, you could try to brute force it in the hopes that it's not a made up key. There was a limit to entering invalid keys and locking you out however I believe they removed that about a month ago.

+1, if you can actually be bothered to try MANY different combinations (honestly, it probably wouldn't take that long) with no idea if the rest of the key is even legit, you might want to try working it out.

Otherwise, mark as not received after seven days.

Sorry. :(
