In my case I can't really remember it. I think I found it on any forum/website where people gave away invite codes.

I knew about its existence quite a while before registering, but since it was accessible only through invitation (and I'm not the kind of person that begs for one) I just let it be. IIRC, when I heard the news that Steam Gifts had opened its doors, and since I fit the minimum requirements to join, I said why not.
